iPhone backup issue

I recently deleted a Microsoft Exchange email account on my iPhone (Model MA712LL version 3.1.3) which apparently was tied to my contacts. All of my contacts were deleted. I no longer have access to the email account. To add insult to injury my iPhone was synced after this happened creating a backup with no contacts. Are my contacts backed up somewhere on my pc running Vista? I really need to restore to a previous backup in iTunes in the desperate hope that my contacts are somewhere on the C drive. I have found the previous versions of the back up but have had no luck restoring them. HELP!
