iPhone 4s low memory

Mar 21, 2015 6:07AM PDT

I have a 16G Iphone 4S that only has only 280 MB available. I've been trying to delete unused apps, and I noticed that Mail was listed at 2.5G Is this just for the program? I only have two email accounts and not that many messages.

Also, is there anyway to delete messages other than one at a time?

Thanks,

peggy

For mail, you may want to curb how much is on the phone.

Curb how much mail on phone
Mar 21, 2015 8:12AM PDT

I know that's what I need to do. I read the article and they said to go to settings, mail and then messages. I only have "Mail, contacts, calendars" and there is no "messages" sub-heading and no place that I can can see to limit this. I did go into the delete file and set it to delete after one day, which should help. I seem to have 934 messages in my inbox, so that's the problem. If there is no "messages", do I need to delete each message individually?

Thanks, peggy

Sorry!

Sorry, but I couldn't see anything in either link that pertained to my problem. Second link only showed one page with no further link.

Nothing there.

You're right. It does not address your problem directly. It only shows the screens where you can reduce the number of days on the ipad.

So while I could use that information to navigate to the controls, it would not write out of memory, do this.

Just clear your messages w/ large attachments
Mar 22, 2015 2:36AM PDT

I would perhaps look for messages with attachments/embedded image threads and only delete those individually. That would possibly make the task easier IME if you are correct that 2.5GB on your device really only amounts to a modest amount of messages. YMMV.

Clear large messages
Mar 22, 2015 4:27AM PDT

So last night when I couldn't sleep. I manually deleated more than 1,200 messages from my in-box. Next thing I saw that it was downloading 1,000 messages to my box, so now I'm back to 1016! I also have tried several times to set the delete messages to "After one day" but it keeps popping back to once a week. So what to do?
There doesn't seem to be anyplace to limit the number of downloads. That would solve the problem. One of the reasons I haven't upgraded past 7.1 is that I don't have enough memory to do it. Now it says that my mail progran, is using 2.7 G -- more than before.

Any help would be most appreciated! Peggy

That setting doesn't work like that AFAIK

AFAIK, 'Mail days to sync' doesn't mean delete automatically after 1 day.

At this point it may be helpful to visit either a full fledged email program on a PC or Mac such as Outlook, or the webmail interface. This way you can (definitively reduce the amount of email in your inbox which ends up syncing to your device.

Let us know if that works for you.

Settings don't work
Mar 23, 2015 4:00AM PDT

I did a bit more research and found that iOS6 did have something that you could use to limit the number of messages downloaded, but it was not carried on in more recent iOS. Too bad!

I use Outlook Express on my PC, but don't know where there is any way to limit numbers of downloads..
Verizon is my email carrier.

I did find out how to delete the trash file on my iPhone, but it didn't really help. In fact now, it says that my Mail is using 2.6GB, and as I mentioned before, if I delete them all, it will begin to download l,000 or more again.

I appreciate all the suggestions. If anyone comes up with another, let me know. If I were to delete my email program and start over, maybe it would help.

Best, peggylenox

Its good that you tried to delete unused apps. Have you checked to see if you have a lot of photos in your ipad? Maybe you have many downloaded songs? Sometimes, certain apps take up more space than the others so it is important to also watch out for that.
