iPAQ hx2790

how does the screen resolution differ with other models like the Dell Axim X51v or the Palm TX? I'm getting second thoughts since i'm also going to be using this for entertainment purposes like video.

another question...

to get things to the point, which of the three would you recommend. I like the 2790 for its fingerprint reader, the X51 for the price and the TX for the screen (as they say...) Can you tell me what a college student should get?

Oh, alright...

As much as it pains me to do so, I'll answer your questions. Happy

For video, the Dell Axim X51v is the king of the walk. It is the only one of the three with a VGA screen (480x640 resolution), and on top of that it has a multimedia accelerator w/ 16MB of dedicated memory. That means you'll be getting the best display and video playback currently possible on a PDA. Next up would by the Palm TX (320x480 w/o accelerator), followed by the iPaq 2790 (240x320 w/o accelerator).

For an overall PDA, the X51v takes 1st place as well due to its specs...ties w/ the 2790 for processor, connectivity, and memory cards, but beats it on internal storage capacity (256MB ROM vs 192MB), and beats the Palm TX at every turn. The only downside is the cost...it's no longer on sale so it's fairly expensive at $499.

Hope this helps,
John

sorry but i have another question
Feb 17, 2006 11:12AM PST

is the screen of the 2790 really that bad? Can i still watch decent videos there? since they have the same price as the X51v, i would perfer the fingerprint reader than the screen.

It's not bad...

It has a 3.5" QVGA, which is what my X30 high has, compared to the X51v's 3.7" VGA screen. Honestly, the QVGA screen isn't that bad at all, though photos and movies do look a lot sharper on a VGA screen. If you want a good analogy, go from a resolution of 1024x768 to 800x600. Ignore the size difference, and just look at the overall quality...that's what it's like going from VGA to QVGA.

If I had a choice between the two, I'd take the VGA screen over the fingerprint reader. Why? The fingerprint reader won't work right if your fingers are dirty or oily, and can be fooled by the proper gummy treat. HP pulled the finger print reader from their PDAs for a while due to the complaints of low accuracy. It's much better now, but standard consumer fingerprint technology is still not good enough for me to rely on. If you want an easier login than typing in a password, try a picture password...tap a certain number of spots on a photo of your choice. Just my preference.

Hope this helps,
John

thanks! really put a lot about the fingerprint reader... Maybe I'll get the X51v if i can get my hands on it here in the Philippines. There are no Dell dealers here nor shipping through their website. Or maybe just get the 2490 for the cheaper alternative!

thanks a lot!
