ipaq 4150/4155 vs dell x30 (624)

Aug 12, 2004 12:44PM PDT

I've been researching these two pdas for awhile now and I have found that they are both very close to what I would like in a pda. But, I would like to know about a few of the differences.

First: the processor difference...will I actually be able to notice this and how much will it affect the pda while running programs, etc.

Second: Windows Mobile 2003 vs Second Edition. is there a big enough differenc that i should buy one or the other. Also, should i wait for a new OS from microsoft.

Third: Battery life, do a few hours have a larg impact overall?

And lastly: A few minor factors that turn me off from the dell are its "uncomforatble stylus," antenna, and design (compared to the ipaq)

Any help on these topics would be very beneficial because i need this before the school year begins, thanks.

I'm impressed with the Dell x30 with wifi. The price looks great and will pressure HP/Compaq to deliver a new model. As to the stylus, try a few. I can't say that many are that comfortable. The design is to fit in the space and also to be lightweight. I really like the old Palm IIIc stylus but let's be honest. That one wieghs many times what I have in other PDAs.

As to battery life, wifi will take its toll as well as the super bright screens. I get a lot more time if I dim the screen. The Dell has other batteries available if you need a spare.

Hey, I really understand your point, and I approve it, but Dell has twoce the speed (processer), that I think is the highest reason I've selcted it... But I agree about the stylus, and I think its really comftble in the aluminium pocket...

First: the processor difference...will I actually be able to notice this and how much will it affect the pda while running programs, etc.

A: To a certain extent the processor will limit your experience with the device but mainly only when you are playing games or watching video.

Second: Windows Mobile 2003 vs Second Edition. is there a big enough differenc that i should buy one or the other. Also, should i wait for a new OS from microsoft.

A: The only difference that I have seen in the SE version is that you have landscape mode applied in the OS along with a few minor tweaks for bluetooth and wi-fi configuration. Besides that SE is relatively similar to Windows Mobile 2003.

Third: Battery life, do a few hours have a larg impact overall?

A: That depends on your usage. Most people do not use their pda's like they would use their laptops in terms of battery life.

And lastly: A few minor factors that turn me off from the dell are its "uncomforatble stylus," antenna, and design (compared to the ipaq)

A: If you like big, clunky, yet priced fairly then go with the Dell. Although I willingly admit the new Ipaqs are not what you would call "compact" in comparison to their last generation of ergonomically correct pda'sHappy.

I would go with the 4150/4155 due to the form factor. You get bluetooth and wi-fi built in but be fully aware that you are paying mainly for the brand name and that small form factor.

I've been following this string of comments and am curious what you meant by "I would go with the 4150/4155 due to the form factor." What does "form factor" mean? Can you elaborate please?

I'm curious about the form factor bit as well. I just got my Dell Axim and love it, its much better then the older Ipaq I had before and as to the stylus issue: I love the stylus in the Dell better then the Ipaq, its easier to grip.
