IP Software

I'm looking for software that will hide my IP address while surfing the web,emailing and using message boards/chat rooms and also let me check/detect other IP address' of people and sites on the web.
I checked the software listed on CNET but most have so many negative reviews I'm not sure which to try. Any suggestions or tips for software that is worth using.
