IP address conflict with another system on network??

Nov 14, 2003 2:44AM PST

I have a linksys router that is hooked up to 4 computers...I've had the cable modem for months and this problem has never happened before.

On my computer I am not able to connect to the internet. When I turn my comp. on a window pops up that says

"Windows-System error
There is an IP address conflict with another system on the network"

How do I solve this problem?
Also all the other 3 computers are able to have a connection to the internet, but not mine?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You

If you can, read our FORUM STICKY. It notes what setting to use on your WIFI ROUTER to avoid the more common reasons for this issue.

You should have started a new post.

Having a post hidden in a post keeps it from being noticed.

Maybe you'd want to create a new discussion and leave us know details

The 3 laptops are using what Operating systems.

What is your setup?

wall > cable/dsl modem/router > wireless router > wired/wireless

Update the firmware in the wireless router, at manufacturers website. Make and model number sticker on wireless router.

Broadcast SSID
Use WPA security

use nothing else.

Have the router use DHCP server. It will automatically assign an ip address so two computers cannot have the same ip address. I have three laptops and once in a while, someone will not log in for a while. When they do, then they get the lower ip address. My laptop will then be assigned a different one.

If you don't get it working, start a new post.

TRY USING A PRESHARED KEY that you make
Mar 21, 2007 7:36PM PDT

on both VPN points and before you use the key encrypt it with an encryption program then paste the encrypted
key into both vpns as a preshared key and see if that helps you will also want to turn on ipsec and cruise over to
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/technol/tcpipfund/tcpipfund_ch14.mspx
and squrit some visine in your eyes before reading cause it will be a long night you also need to know how to route ipsec incoming and outgoing example rules
use the add wizard to simplfiy things
always start with ANY IP ADDRESS and then use MY IP ADDRESS and then build from there the loopback is an option also as a DNS name just type loopback ipsec is funny when using DNS names and for every entry you use always bring it back EXAMPLE any ip address to my ip address THEN THE NEXT ONE WOULD BE my ip address to any ip address and you also have the option of using
the preshared key you created in ipsec also and make sure you move it to the top above kerbos and you can play with ipsec and make all kinds of keys and different negotitation combonations or include them all but on your routers you need to use PRESHRED KEYS anyways so no one can walk in through your security door gateway if you do not have a remote endpoint the router wont connect like my setup i use it but my endpoint is my router and the other endpoint is my ip address which creates a vpn connection from my ip to my router then ipsec secures all traffic from and to them endpoints tunnel layer like dual tunnels so IF hackEr wanna be A trys to worm there way in to the tunnel they become TRAPPED and cant navigate past or out of the tunnel but you have to be specific with your route destinations in ipsec and once you get your routers communicating from endpoint to endpoint between each other and use long keys and a high encryption tool on your key
and a key can be anything from your name to numbers and letters to numbers and symbols and so on as an example lets say this is my preshared key MyKeYrOuTerS*Y*S@R3MoTeLoCaTi0n that key already has a strength buy how many letters numbers and symbols i used
then you take your key and run it through an encryption tool that will encrypt your key you made then you paste the encrypted key into your preshared keys spots on the router and in IPSEC if you do it right you will be able to access all over your points but if you have something wrong in ipsec you wont be able to connect to the internet or your routers and then all you have to do is disable ipsec to get your connections working again then undo what you did to stop the connection
it is helpful to add your endpoints one at a time and then try your connection and make sure you add your router gateway as as a RULE as well as your IP you use mmc.exe in the run command to open the mmc and click files\add and remove snap ins to fire up ipsec load the local computer for ipsec monitoring
the tech net address will help you with ip sec

It's unlikely many will arrive here and if 46 posts didn't fix it, your issue is unique and deserves a new post all your own.

same problem with my wireless network
Oct 30, 2006 3:30AM PST

My wife and I have a small home network. It consists of my laptop, which has a wireless connection from a belkin wireless router, and my wife's desktop, which i connected by cable to the back of the wireless router.

Lately we have been having problems with the internet just disconnecting for periods of time. there was no way to reconnect other than to just wait a couple hours for it to come back each time it happened. and it happend once at least every few days. now, i am getting the ''ip address conflict'' message on my laptop several times each hour and i have to restart the router each time to fix it. no message comes up on her desktop though. whenever i get the message i notice that all the lights on my router are off.

i have no idea why this is happening. i've done ipconfig and renew to try to fix this but no luck. our ip addresses are slightly different anyway so i don't see why there should be a conflict. Can anyone help me solve this? i can give more info if needed.
thanks.

Windows system error -- IP address conflict
May 13, 2007 6:27AM PDT

I have three computers on my network: one XP, one W2KPro and one '98 (I know, I know ...). Only the XP was affected.

I traced the start of the problem to the installation of Windows XP update KB930916 on May 11. I uninstalled that update (left the security update installed), and the problem appears to be gone.

Hope that helps.

locating offending machine
Oct 14, 2011 12:07AM PDT

As others have pointed out, someone could of assigned a static address in a dhcp range.

In Windows, start with the complaining machine, go in to the event log viewer, and look for
error 4199 in system. Why Microsoft does not put the most important piece information in the popup error message is just plain stupid. The error message in the event log will have the conflicting machines mac address.
If you have managed network switches you can then track down the conflicting machine. Maybe the other machine was a sleep.

I'm sticking with Linux.
