IOS8 ruined my iPad today

Sep 18, 2014 11:47AM PDT

Sept 18 is iOS day for downloads. As in the past Apple finds your system and secretly downloads each update...it sits in your iPad memory waiting for you to say "Install"

Well & good....BUT today, when Apple found my iPad and downloaded iOS8.... I SUDDENLY lost my WiFI connection!! Just before this happened, the Settings icon lit up with a Red 1 in it....and sure enough in Settings appeared the reminder to "Install"....

NOTE...I did NOT ask for an installation!

All other computers in the house were working fine...except my iPad. My desktop had WiFi access, Internet was OK, the WiFi router was OK as well..
But the iPad could not find the Internet....I had lost connect ability.......
So, I re- booted.....and all came alive...iPad was back & and running on my WiFi link.

Did anyone else have such an event?

iTunes
Sep 19, 2014 9:06PM PDT

Hey, did you install iOS 8 using a connection to your computer and iTunes? It does take a long time either way, but through iTunes uses far less memory.

Btw, Jim B, Yosemite isn't out yet...

Good grief

You honestly mean to tell me you have *never* had to reboot a computer to re-connect to a known network? Seriously? <yawn>

wifi and iOS 8

All Apple devices switch off connectivity when being restored or activated or rebooted or a new OS being installed. Sounds like your problem was resolved and not a problem? I am sure you also had a choice to click Install or not.

Enjoy the new features of iOS 8 -- some of them are pretty cool.

My iPad 2 is ruined by the new update IOS 8.2
Oct 17, 2014 3:44PM PDT

This new update is totally disaster! I've talked with apple technicians, they knew so many people with older model iPad have numerous problems with the new updates. I lost cellular connection that indicates no service, having to RE boot my iPad 10+ times thru out the day to connect 3G with AT&T, freeze buttons - can't tab, slow connection..etc. And They told me only few percentages of people have problems. The only suggestion they made is to change iPad 2 to original factory setting with new current updates. Again? AT&T representatives told me that it's not their problems, it's the new update is NOT compactible with older devices. They have so many complains yet it's Apple new updates ruin iPad 2 which I'd never have ANY problem until just now. ( I have my iPad for 4years, ran smooth sailing ) Apple Technician even suggested perhaps is my iPad itself having problem not the software. Are your kidding me!! They just want me to spend more money to buy new model! Somehow, I start loosing faith with Apple. The way they practice business isn't ethical. We need to demand new updates to downgrade for older iPad, It is not right to stuck with tablet runs like turtle speed and halfly awake. Believe me, even changed to factory setting it will still have the same problems.

Don't restore from backup

Start from scratch. Your rant is silly without first trying it, but declaring it 'doesn't work on all older devices', which is not true.

With every software update on various devices (not just Apple) there are a few casualties.

be careful to judge. I had the update install on my iphone 5 and ipad 2. Both immediately started having problems. Black boxes appeared where graphics were supposed to be also. I have AT&T as my carrier and called them to check it out from that angle. We went through all the steps that we could and it was definitely not a carrier issue. I had already checked everything out with my router and internet. That left the update. I went through days of having to constantly restart my ipad because of the 'no service' issue. I knew that it was just a matter of time before Apple fixed it because I wasn't the only one experiencing it. Btw, I was told the same, take my ipad to the store and have it checked out. I'm a logical person and have a technology background. That just didn't fly. As for Apple itself, I am considering switching to another tablet to update. I think that there are some technological advances that other companies are making that Apple is behind in now. Steve Jobs kept Apple on the cutting edge and I think it has slipped.

Playing the devil's advocate

Are you disagreeing with my advice that it might be advisable to start from scratch, or are you just being difficult(?) Wink

While I sympathize, I don't understand the logic you have used. Why balk at taking the product into a store so they can assist? Even though I have ripped apart Apple devices (mostly iOS compatible ones) on many an occasion to perform the needed repairs, I am not above taking one into a shop for a second set of eyes to take a look. Some of their employees actually do have great ideas, regardless of how often the 'genius bar' knowledge base gets ripped in public forums.

Keep in mind that moving to a MS Surface or Samsung Galaxy (etc.) isn't w/o it's own set of technology challenges. They are merely different than the ones you have run into w/ Apple. You know as well as I do that these 'technological advances' of Apple's competitors are mostly splitting hairs in the scheme of things.

Avoiding iOS8 on mobile devices
Nov 6, 2014 5:36AM PST

Ouch.

I have avoided iOS 8 since I have a first generation iPad Mini and an iPhone 4S. Apparently it can run poorly on older devices.
