Resolved Question

IObit Start Menu 8 closes after few seconds

Feb 10, 2015 7:38AM PST

Hi,

CNET has helped me several times in the past, and I hope you will again! I have a HP Pavilion 23 All-in-one computer running Windows 8, updated to 8.1.

I had a "tune-up" last October at Office Depot, which is where I got the IObit Start Menu 8 button. And I love it! But while using some of their programs Office Depot installed, I updated it to version 2.0.1, and probably shouldn't have.

Any advise on how I can go back to the version 2?

Office Depot also installed Advanced System Care 8 free, IObit Malware Fighter, Uninstaller, Smart Defrag 3, and Driver Booster 2.1. Is anyone familiar with these programs? Previously I just used CCleaner and it always seems to do an ok job.

Thanks in advance for any advise!!!

"Advanced System Care 8 free, IObit Malware Fighter, Uninstaller, Smart Defrag 3, and Driver Booster 2.1."

All those tend to create more trouble than fix issues. For a Windows 8/8.1 start button I use the FREE Classic Shell at http://www.classicshell.net/

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-8/1107908-win-8-native-defrag-tool.html is one of a thousand posts on defragging. The end comes where they admit they are going to move forward and ignore defragging.

Driver Booster sounds like a grand way to tank a PC. Drivers do not wear out.

CNET has rescued me again! I decided to uninstall all the IObit programs and go ahead with the classic shell.

You guys really are great. Thanks again!

None of it does any good and often has bad side effects. I would use your backup to restore your computer minus all the carpware.

The programs you have are all the free versions of

software that if you upgrade to the Pro version for 29.95 you don't get splash screens of other things that slow you down. Because the the free versions you get advertisements of other products. This is a know practice especially in utility software. I believe Anti-MalwareBytes is the best malware program. I imagine Iobit is the same where you have to run a scan manually and if you buy the Pro version it gives you real time protection. Windows has defrag built in and it works even if it takes longer you could run it at night when sleeping. Driver Booster ROFL. I stay away from all programs that tell me about drivers unless they are from the maker of the PC. I had Acer's and Dell's and they have their own software that runs and tells you if their a re COMPATIBLE newer drivers. See sometime Dell or HP or any other maker modifies their Nvidia driver for their own machines and the Nvidia drivers on the Nvidia site aren't as comaptible. CCleaner is a program I use and they also have a Pro version.
