Invalid VxD Dynamic Link Call

Aug 27, 2005 1:01PM PDT

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Win98 computer. It won't boot up, even in safe mode. Here is the error message I get:

"CANNOT FIND DEVICE FILE NEEDED TO RUN WINDOWS OR A WINDOWS APPLICATION

THE WINDOWS REGISTRY OR SYSTEM.INI FILE REFERS TO THIS DEVICE FILE BUT THE DEVICE FILE NO LONGER EXISTS.

IF YOU DELETED THE FILE TRY UNINSTALLING ASSOCIATED APPLICATION USING ITS UNINSTALL OR SETUP PROGRAM

IF YOU STILL WANT TO USE THE APPLICATION ASSOCIATED W/ THIS DEVICE FILE TRY REINSTALLING THAT APPLICATION TO REPLACE THE MISSING FILE

C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/VMM32/ifsmgr.VXD
C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/VMM32/ios.VXD
C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/MVV32/IFSMGR.VXD
C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM/MVV32/IOS.VXD

WHILE INITIALIZING DEVICE INT13: INVALID. VxD DYNAMIC LINK CALL TO DEVICE NUMBER 10, SERVICE7. YOUR WINDOWS CONFIGURATION IS INVALID. RUN THE WINDOWS SETUP PROGRAM AGAIN TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM."

Then the computer shuts itself off. I have tried using my Win98 startup disk, but I don't really know what to do. I did the scandisk/all, and I have tried to start from the registry backups, but nothing works. I even tried using the startup disk and starting with CD support with the Win98 CD in the drive, but it says "CDR101: Not ready reading drive E abort, retry, fail?"

Can anyone help me out? The computer is a Soyo, and has 256MB RAM and 60GB HD. Not really sure about anything else though. Thanks!

Sher, You Probably Need To Reinstall Windows...

You could try an "over the top" installation which "should" replace the damaged files. Do it like this:

Place the Windows 98 boot floppy in the drive and restart the computer choosing "Start WITH CD Rom support". It should start to a DOS prompt indicating the "A:\>" Prompt. At the "A:\>" prompt, type so it looks like this:

A:\>D: (where "D" is the drive letter of your CD-Rom drive. If it's not D, then type the correct letter), then Press the "Enter" key. You should now see the CD rom drive letter displayed. (My example below indicates it as D.) At the CD-Rom drive letter prompt, type so it looks like this:

D:\>setup.exe, then press the "Enter" key. Windows 98 should now reinstall over the top of itself.

Hope this helps.

Still having trouble
Aug 28, 2005 9:23AM PDT

Well, I tried it and the light came on and I could hear the disc spinning, but I got this error message:

CDR101: Not ready reading drive E abort, retry, fail?

Could it be that the CD driver on the startup disk doesn't work with my CD drive? Are there others on there that I could try, and if so, how? Or maybe I need to check the cables inside the box?

Thanks for your help!

but, you didn't provide any details of the procedure and steps used nor did you identify what was used. Please let those fingers do the talking.

SherA, A Couple Of Thoughts About That Error
Aug 29, 2005 1:19AM PDT

First, although your CD-Rom might normally be designated the "E" drive (or something else for that matter), sometimes the bootfloppy startup will move it up or down one letter. Try using the same procedures as earlier by changing the drive letter as I've designated below. Whatever drive letter you typed in before, try one letter up and down. Experiment a little.:

A:\>D: then press "Enter" and run the setup.exe command using the previous instructions.

or

A:\>F: then press enter and run the setup.exe commmand.

If that doesn't get the job done, then it's very possible the CD-Rom is faulty. Did it work correctly before all this happened?

Hope this helps.

(NT) The CD drive was D before

and it worked fine. When I used the startup disk, it created a ram drive which was drive D and so it changed the CD to drive E.

I'll go ahead and try again, this time using D and F instead of E and see if that helps. Last time I started the computer with the floppy in drive A, then put the CD in, and at the prompt I typed in E: and hit enter. Then at the E prompt I typed in setup.exe and hit enter.

Thanks again for your help

Yes use E as the CD drive only for this

operation. The Win boot floppy creates a virtual drive using the letter D for diagnostic purposes.

After the Op Sys is installed the CD drive will be D again.
