invalid system disk( harddrive)

Mar 30, 2005 1:05AM PST

windows ME on 633mghz e-machine
knoowing better and stupid really do go in the same sentence... I deleted some files which should have had nothing to do with anything, from a program deleted long ago, however, upon restart, next morning, only one row of the desktopicons showed up. another restart, and the message invalid system drive appears in dos. of course I don't have a startup disk. Using a system file disk on a flooppy from another win 98computer, I did get into the computer (dos only) windows won't boot. dare I use the erd file in the root directory to restore the disk? will all programs have to be reinstalled? Is there a path change I could make to get a reboot? any help would be appreciated thanx norm

success, sort of
May 21, 2005 1:52PM PDT

I did get the file extracted, I used the command line: extract/c c:\windows\options\cabs\win_19.cab\
IFshLp.sys C:\windows The /c tells the computer to copy the file to the destination c:\windows

I used a similar command line with a /D switch to display the win_19.cab file list the file name was wrong, I read a small L (l) as a capital I.

the file copied i had to confirm an ovewrite and that was it but it still didn't work. the message is :

the file manager can't find the helper driver make sure IfshLp.sys is installed

I get theat message if I try to boot from the c:prompt, after the computer begins the set up

I did retry the reg/fix was told that everything was fixed it took 5 minutes

any dos command typed at a prompt seems to give the proper response so everything must be going through windows system command. Is there any way to access the setup files in the \cabs directory? Norm

If you just want to install ME again
May 21, 2005 9:16PM PDT

over the top of itself and not lose other data on the harddrive, you can do that by getting to the A: prompt, type C: and press Enter, then

cd\windows\options\cabs and press Enter

and then type

setup

The installation should start....make sure you have the Product Code Key for ME before you start or the install will stop. If you need it, it's in the registry and you should be able to get it from dos according to instructions Bill Gaston gave as follows...

FIND CD KEY IN DOS:

THANKS TO BILL GASTON:

When Windows will not start, here is how to find the registration number from

MS-DOS.

Type the following entry on one line including the quotation marks:

regedit /e KEY.txt

"hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion"

Note: You may need to change the word "windows" in this line if that is not where

Windows is installed.

Type: edit KEY.txt and then press Enter.

Look for your registration number using the examples above for the version of

Windows you own.

Note: If the system registry is so corrupt that it cannot be accessed and you know

the file System.1st exists in the root folder of the C:\ drive:

Type the following command at the MS-DOS prompt, and then press Enter:

find /i "productkey" c:\system.1st >c:\key.txt

Please see the paragraph just prior to edit and determine the key information.

Quick word of caution on WinME reinstall
May 22, 2005 8:26AM PDT

IF:

A)
You're running Window Media Player 9, rename the file WMPLOC.DLL in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ to WMPLOC.OLD.

B)
You're running IE6.0 uninstall or downgrade to IE5.x.

Both of the above BEFORE trying the reinstall.

caution

thanks Z but too late. it took about 5 restarts before the instalation completed but it seems ok on the surface I haven't really got into it yet.

anything special I should look for as far as problems?

I' am curious why we couldn't make a repair. Just me though I hate giving in and saying I can't fix something. I'll get over it, aren't computers wonderful!

thanks Toni, ZEE for the help and effort,
Norm.
P.S. I'll let you know if something blows up.

Take a look at
May 24, 2005 7:18AM PDT

Internet Explorer:
If you had IE6.0 installed, it was reverted to IE5.x and it may now be a soup of both.

Windows Media Player:
If you were running version 9, but didn't see any error message during reinstall of Windows, you should be OK.

Visit NOW the Windows Update website and install the patches and updates available:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Please always reboot when asked to.

Trying to install everything and reboot once is calling for trouble.

But test your system and do post back if you face any further trouble.

Good luck,

Zee
