invalid format

my desktop computer has been stood for about a year while i have been overseas,i switched it on the other day and it starts to boot,comes to the screen where it shows hard drive cdrom etc, and the just comes onto a black screen with invalid format on it. thats as far as it goes. tried getting into setup and bios but as soon as i hit a key it goes to invalid format.. help would be much apreciated. oh yes it is a custom built machine with xp sp2.
