Internet won't connect on startup

Feb 9, 2008 7:58AM PST

When Vista starts up, the network will be connected, but not the connection to the internet. To connect to the internet, I either have to unplug the network cable and plug it back in (sometimes several times), or sometimes it will work when I first repair the link between the network and then reset the network adapter. Any suggestions/solutions?

Comp specs:
Athlon 6000+, 2gb ram, (vista 32 bit), Gigabyte S-Series GA-M57 SLI-S4 motherboard (NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller), and the cable modem is thee Motorola SBG900i-AU.

Two Suggestions...
Feb 9, 2008 8:31AM PST

First, download and install updated firmware for your modem and/or router... A number of older modem/routers don't have the correct firmware for Vista..

Second, download and install updated ethernet/wireless network adapter drivers. Visit the computer manufacturer's website or the adapter manufacturer's website.. Updated network drivers are being released frequently.

Hope this helps.

I tried these, although the drivers were ultra confusing to obtain and then installing, ***?!.. and no didn't change anything. I also tried to make a static ip address (i think that's what it's called) and that didn't work but it did instantly switch the internet on when I changed it back to obtain automatically. Stange.

I guess this is just 'one of those things'... it will probably fix when I reinstall windows - not going to do it terribly soon though! not worth it just for this little hiccup.

Any other suggestions?

Thx,
J

If Unplugging/Replugging Fixes It... Then...
Feb 11, 2008 5:57AM PST

..I start troubleshooting the hardware. Try the connection on someone else's system to see if it's your computer or the rest of your system. Replace the ethernet cable.. Replace the modem/router....then replace the ethernet port (probably requires a motherboard exchange..)

Tried disabling the firewall to see if that's the culprit?

Hope this helps.
