Internet woes ... even with Firefox

May 5, 2005 11:47AM PDT

Hello,

I'm offering up one of those sad

'My browser won't work - please help'

posts. My Internet Explorer 6 began to refuse to load pages ('Page cannot be viewed' message nearly every time) almost a year ago. I think I contracted something when downloading a security patch from Microsoft, though no one believes me. Anyway, I haven't had much more luck with Mozilla or Firefox. With both of these browsers I am usually able to navigate to 2 or 3 pages before I come to a stop. Thereafter, typing in a URL or clicking on a link causes a half-second of activity followed by 'Done' but nowhere 'xcept where I was. I've been all over this old world-wide-web and I've tried several things, but to no avail. So today I thought "I'll check the error log!", and danged if I didn't find this error message at least two times for each day I tried the Internet: "The IPSEC Services service terminated with the following error: The authentication service is unknown." Well, I searched the net and have downloaded a trial copy of TheGreenBow : VNS Client , which has references to IPSEC and controls; but I don't have any further clue as to what this might be about.

Helplessly yours.

I suggest you contact your ISP helpdesk to check your Internet connection settings. It could be the problem is there, but I'm far from sure.

Hope this helps.

Go to the control panel and click network connections. Delete your connection and start over. you may need to enter primary and secondary DNS numbers and may have to get them from your ISP. Try checking your ISP homepage and see if they have the info or step by step instructions to set up your connection or like my ISP has, a downloadable configuration file that automatically configures you PC for you.

You could try going through your current configuration but its easier to just make a new connection.
