General discussion

internet will not connect the in safemode network?

Aug 14, 2010 7:00PM PDT

My roommate has this Banker fox virus that will not let him do anything on the internet. The solution seems to download the malwarebyte program but the problem is he cannot even go on the internet to do that. So he need to connect to the internet on the safe mode networking to download it on the internet but it will not let him do it. It states If your computer is protected by a firewall or proxy make sure Firefox is permitted to access the web. How does he do that? Thanks in advance.

Try the lateral approach

Use a relative or friend's computer to download the MBAM installation file and also the definitions file. Copy, (burn), then to a CD/DVD or copy them to some memory stick, take that to the infected computer, copy them across to that computer. Reboot into Safe Mode, and install and update from there. Run the scan whilst in Safe Mode.

Update file?
Aug 15, 2010 2:07AM PDT

Hi thanks for your help. I was able to download the malware program on my computer jump drive and load on the infected computer in the safe mode where it is doing a full scan now. The problem is the update file no longer exist as a separate file and it is incorporated in the main program so I cannot download it, because I cannot connect to the internet. Should it still work?

It may be OK

I would continue with the scan and let us know what it finds. When it's done, see if the computer will now bootup without problems. You can then use MBAM to update itself from the internet.

If you want, you can still download an update, although it will be out of date. How to do that is here;
http://forums.malwarebytes.org/index.php?showtopic=10138

Look for 4. ISSUE: I need to get the latest database onto a computer that cannot access the Internet, and find the here link for a direct download of the update.

Hope that helps.

Malwarebytes caught some but.......
Aug 15, 2010 5:50AM PDT

Hi I did a full scan with the Malwarebytes without the update and it caught a lot of spyware and Trojans and rogue virus's. But when I went on the computer in the full mode the virus was still there and I still could not access any programs. I then downloaded SuperAnti Spyware and jumped it to the infected computer did a quick scan and it found more trojans so I decided to do a full scan. That program came with a manual update. So it is the newest editions. I am still doing the full scan in the safe mode. Wish me luck. This is almost as bad as me removing this anti virus program from my roommates computers. It took me hours.

Finally

I wanted to thank you for helping me,. I finally got it working. The trick was downloading the update file for the Malwarebytes. Thanks again. I feel like I just climbed K2.

Yep, K2 sounds about right, :-)

Glad you got it sorted. When things get this bad there is little option but to 'plough on', and you have done well to get the computer fixed.

May be your friend will now reconsider the security aspects for this system?

McAfee Security breach!
Aug 16, 2010 3:26AM PDT

Funny he has McAfee which comes with AT&T. I also have it and I know I update it many times a day. I am not sure about him, plus he went to a funky site. I had to pry out where he was when this happened. Yes you can imagine. But McAfee admits for some reason it doesn't catch this virus. And that what really eeks me. So I am going to download that Maleware bytes for my own computer and the other program. Why would McAfee have such a security breach like that? The other problem is that I have to send my laptop off to HP because they updated my Bios and Chipset and now it just doesn't over heat I can't play a lot of games(casual) I was able to play before. SO I needed his laptop when mine is out. Thanks again

Probably not McAfee's fault.

McAfee like other anti-virus scanners only scan for viruses. Some of the AV's also scan for spyware as well. But today's threats come in many forms, and that's why we need more in our arsenal of defences.

I have ZoneAlarm, (firewall, AV and anti-spyware), plus MBAM, SUPERAntiSpyware, and also Windows Defender. Not all running continuously though. Only ZA does that. But the others I perform manual scans regularly.
