Question

Internet tethering (WIFI)works at home but not at the office

Mar 25, 2012 6:14PM PDT

Hi!

I have a strange problem when I try to connect my macbook pro (with Lion 10.7.3) and my iphone 4 (ios 5.1).

At home, everything works as it should. When I start "internet tethering" through the settings button on my iphone, the signal from the iphone appears in my network list, and I am able to connect to internet through it.

But when I am at the office, with the same iphone and the same computer, it doesn't work. Other computers at work can pick up the signal of my iphone but my Macbook pro cannot.

Using the USB-cable works fine both at home and at the office, but the connection via WIFI just works at home.

I really don't know where the problem might be, anyone can help?

Have you contacted your network admin regarding...

...whether or not there are any odd restrictions on your wireless network at work(?)

In various office settings I can't count on my fingers and toes all the times I've had to fiddle with devices just to get wifi to work. Home is normally less industrially protected IME.

....sounds more like an office network issue and not as much of a handset issue. Many advanced office networks limit access to only approved devices.

I am afraid that that's not the case...

Thanks for your replies, but the office network has nothing to do with my problem.

I sit in an office where the only "network" is a Wifi-router. Besides, I first noticed the problem when the router was broken and there was no "network" at all. So the problem is not there.

I think that the problem must be somewhere in my computer. I tried turning on the "internet hotspot" of my iphone and the white macbook of a colleague could see the signal from it, but my Macbook pro still can't.

That said, I still think that the strangest thing is the fact that my macbook pro CAN see the signal when I am at home.

Can anyone come up with some kind of lead on how to solve this?

Thanks!
