internet stopped working after coming out of hibernation

My friends Win ME computer went into hibernation and when she came back, the internet no longer worked. Her computer isnt making a link with our router (cant even make a direct link to the modem). She's tried everything... including doing a system restore, nothings worked. She still cant get her computer to link to the router and connect to the internet. Any help would be appreciated.

Desktop machines with little provocation will fail to be able to use hibernation. After it fails, we configure the machine to power down the monitor, but not to sleep or hibernate. This is the common cure for this.

Thank you. I talked to my friend and she said that the hibernate was disabled, and so it was actually on standby. She couldn't get her computer to come out of standby, and had to turn off her computer. When she turned it back on it did not run the scan disk and theinternet no longer worked.

...anything more about the computer. We know it's Windows ME, but how old is it? What type of modem? Cable or DSL, etc.? If on a DSL set up, have you tried "re synching" the modem? CLICK HERE for That Procedure

Have you since run the Scandisk program on the computer??. Have you tried installing updated ethernet drivers for the machine? (They can normally be obtained while online at another computer, then burned to a CD and installed on the affected machine.) Have you tried reseating the ethernet card? Swapped in a different modem? With an "always on" connection like that, has she checked for viruses, spyware, etc. by running the programs that are listed "HERE"?

It is an HP pavillion7940. She connects to a Linksys cable modem through a D-Link router. Her computer will not connect through the router or the modem itself. She completely restored the entire system using the disks provided by HP. She did scan for viruses before restoring her system, and all she found was spyware. Of the 4 programs,only one was removable.

Her internal modem is a Lucent Win Modem. Her Ethernet Adapter is Realtek RTL 8139(A)

PC,

Since she's using the ethernet connection, try downloading the newest RealTek driver from the link below, then install it on her machine:

RTL8139(A/B/C/D/8130)/810X series Drivers

Click on the link above and once at the site, look at the chart below. Click on any of the blue "Go" buttons to the right of the listing titled: "Auto installation program(support Win981st/Win98SE/WinME/Win2K/WinXP ,ver.606)" to start the download. The file is a ZIP file, so you'll need an unzipper to open the file. Once it's unzipped, read the "Setup.txt" on how to install the new driver. (It's generally involves running the "setup.exe" file from withing the file set.) Copy it to a CD, then run the setup.exe file after placing the CD on her machine. After installing the drivers, you'll need to restart the machine.

Could have attempted to shutdown and not gone into standby mode?

If your friends computer shutdown (standby???) was the result of a power surge, spike, sag or brownout, it may be that upon receiving this power fluctuation it attempted to shutdown but was unable to complete resulting in her having to manually power it down.

If this was the cause and the actual event, then perhaps the modem or router have been fried or damaged. Some damage may have also happened to the Computer also if this is the case, but not currently be evident.

Check her modem and router seperately on a different computer, you may also need to check her network card etc.. also seperately.

If you find out that the computer was the victim of a power fluctuation, it would be best to have a qualified technician give it the once over to ensure that everything is still working properly and up to scratch.
