1. Please read through the article [Q314095] which describes ways to diagnose and resolve issues that can cause problems when you try to use an Internet browser, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), or Telnet to communicate with servers on the Internet.
2. The article [HOW TO: Troubleshoot Situations Where You Cannot Connect to Secure Web Sites by Using Internet Explorer in Windows XP (Q813444)] provides information and procedures that you can use to troubleshoot certain situations.
Note: The following are areas discussed that in my opinion should be looked at closely:
a. Create a new User Profile
b. Register .Dll files
c. Verify that the Microsoft Cryptographic Services service is started
3. If IE appears to stop responding (hangs) when opened but the animated globe in the upper-right corner of the browser window continues to spin, look to see if there is a message in the status bar such as Detecting proxy settings... [Q220902] and report that information for further assistance.
4. The article [Q314067] explains that there are utilities that can provide useful information when you are trying to determine the cause of TCP/IP networking problems and lists recommendations for use. Although the list is not complete, it does provide examples that show how you can use them to track down problems on the network setup.
I've got a Supra 56k External modem and I'm trying to setup an internet connection in XP Professional. XP located and installed my Modem, it say's its working fine and even communicates with it. However, when I go and try to setup a new network connection, I get to the screen where it asks how do you want to connect to the internet and the modem selection cannot be selected!!! It's faded out, the only thing that selectable is a broadband connection. Also in the control panel the modem/phone selection is not availible when you double click on it. Any suggestions??? Thx.
