Internet Security Suites vs seperate firewall, antivrs etc

Aug 31, 2005 4:02AM PDT

I took the plunge and bought a new Dell 9100 and am moving towards broadband. I think I have read too much on internet security and need help. Is it better to license secutity apps on an individual basis e.g.anti virus, firewall, spyware etc. or an internet security suite such as Norton, Trend, Zone etc. Any suggestions would be great!

Brac, My Personal Opinion...

Separate applications is the only way to go..Here's why.

1. Most Security Suites have lots of extra programs that you don't need.

2. Most Security Suites have only one program that you really like and the others may be substandard. The firewall of one suite may work great but the antivirus is not satisfactory....or the antivirus on another security suite works great but the firewall/antispyware is junk....that sort of thing.

3. If something goes wrong with one program in the suite (corrupted files, bad updates, etc.), then the whole suite can take a hit. To fix it, you may need to uninstall the whole package because all the shared and linked files are use by all in the package.

4. It can be cheaper to use separate applications. There are good antiviruses, firewalls, antispyware, etc. for FREE. Check them out. You can also find brand name antivirus programs for free when you watch local advertisements for sales..

Hope this helps.

None of the suites are good in all aspects, in fact it is not unusal for one aspect to create problems, especially when MS patches things.
