everyone has their favorites and every review sites will have different rankings so the reality is you will have to pick and choose which one works for you. The free ones are just as good as the retail ones, just don't have all the unnecessary, resource hogging, bells and whistles.

Personally I stick with Microsoft Security Essentials for viruses, malwarebytes for spyware and the browsers adblock addons for those ads that link to malware. They will cover about everything except you the user unless you totally practice safe surfing. Most infections and malware is caused by the wrong click at the wrong time allowing the nasty to bypass all security.
