Due to so many running VPNs and PCs all over the map on speed I'm going to write what I would do.
1. If the ISP provides a modem and router in the bundle. Take it. It's the exception you won't get full speed with reasonable distances to the modem+router.
2. If you want fast WiFi you CAN NOT SHARE THE WIFI. It must be yours and yours alone. So many don't get this. WiFi is shared air space. Ethernet can have packets flying at the same time due to its design. Yes it still piles up at the switch but it wins on sharing, maximizing what you have.
3. SPEED IS NOT WHAT IT SEEMS. I had a gamer that went from DSL with low LAG to cable and high LAG. The DSL was in the 10 to 20 megabits and the cable was in the 50+ megabits. They were upset about that.
CNET has a great list at https://www.cnet.com/topics/networking/best-networking-devices/ I'd be fine with any of those.
4. Today if I was shopping outside that list I'd stick with routers that had all GIGABIT ETHERNET PORTS and 802.11ac WiFi. To get the best speed you must be not too far from the router and use the 5 GHz band.
I have internet service of 50Mbps. I understand that the fastest wireless speed I can get is the slowest bottleneck in the system. My question is what is the best wireless router I can get to have the fastest home internet service and with the products out their would I save money dropping my service down to say 30 or 20Mbps? Thanks
