Internet Problems

Apr 24, 2004 12:09AM PDT

I'm having a real pain of a PC problem, i'd consider myself a PC expert but this is testing my absolute limits, so heres the story. I have BT Yahoo Broadband (570k) (England), and after connection, should i visit certain internet forums, and most visibly try to use p2p programs the internet gradually grinds to a halt and the "send" light continually stays on. I cannot connect after this either, and i have to restart. I have Zonealarm Pro, but the problem occured before installation too. Has anyone got any ideas?

p.s I should note that there seems to be problems with forums and websites using login's, as every page seems to forget that iv'e logged in, these sites are usually the ones that casue the crash, I should also add that after freezin the disconection hangs for a while.

Psions,

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. Depending on your issue, we might need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving. Do you have an antivirus scanner? Which one? The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, please try the computer clean up instructions at the link below to shut down unnecessary start up programs and to optimize the hard drive:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6122-0.html?forumID=44&threadID=2966&messageID=35611

Next, because P2P programs can really cause problems, please run all of the "malware" removal tools listed in the link below:

http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6132-0.html?forumID=32&threadID=1313&start=0

Hope this helps and let us know how it goes.

You didn't share the name of the P2P program.

Most have "issues." And the result is inline with your complaints.

What happens if you don't use P2P or have it installed?

Does Spybot, Adware, Cwshredder and Housecall all come back clean or are you having to leave stuff inplace to use that P2P?

Tell more.

I mean ALL p2p programs, Morpheus, Kazaa, Bearshare, they all cause the problem, but i must stress that it's not just p2p, but certain websites, and forums, that also forget my login status too, which i can only think of as a cookie problem, but would this cause the internet freeze?

Most websites that cause the problem are "Flashy" sites, and this one allways causes the freeze (www.apartments.com) whilst using the search utilities.

All bad stuff. "Morpheus, Kazaa, Bearshare, they all cause the problem,"

Your machine will only get better when these are gone. No one I know of can fix this one as long as such is allowed on the machine.

If you don't believe this, I invite you to ask about this in the Security Forum.

Best of luck,

Bob

I have none of these programs on my computer, I only ever had kazaa, and all of it has been erased, aswell as its ad-ware e.t.c, I STRESS that some websites and forums cause the problem aswell so p2p isnt all to blame.

I can only reply that your former posts disagree with your last post. As such, when faced with flip-flop stances as these, I can only hope you understand the issues.

By having allowed such P2P on your machine, the OS is "suspect" and you might have to start over to find out if that damage was the cause.

Psions, Just Some Suggestions...
Apr 26, 2004 4:31AM PDT

It sounds like the machine is overloaded with programs and maybe cookies and Temporary Internet Files. Which browser are you using? If Internet Explorer, then make sure to clear ALL of the files from the "C\Documents and Settings\Yourusername\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files" folder. In addition, clean out the "History" folder and the "Temp" folder in that same "Local Settings" directory. Next, in Internet Options, "General" tab, under "Temporary Internet Files" section, click on the "Settings" button. Move the "Amount of Disk Space to use" slider to a number like 5 MB, instead of the "hundreds" that are listed there as default.

Have you tried using a different browser? Does one like "Firefox" have similar issues?

Have you shut down all the unnecessary start up programs running in the background which can cause conflicts and hangs while using the internet? Click on Start-Run, type "msconfig", click on OK, then click on the "Start Up" tab. UNCHECK any programs that aren't required to be running. Check at the link below for which programs are necessary.

http://www.spywareinfo.com/startup_content.htm

In addition, shut down unnecessary "Services" using the link below:

http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

Next, you mentioned a USB modem. Have you got the most recent software for it and have you updated the ethernet drivers on your machine?

Hope this helps.
