Question

internet problem

Jul 11, 2017 11:40AM PDT

Since yesterday my desktop suddenly stopped having internet access. Whenever it starts up it says i have internet access (no yellow triangle) but it won't actually connect, and after a minute or so the yellow triangle appears.

troubleshooter thinks it may have to do with the dns servers.
I've tried everything i can think of to fix this issue:
-restart pc
-restart router
-check ethernet cable with laptop (works fine)
-flush dns
-netsh winsock reset
-change dns server adresses
-uninstall antivirus software

nothing has worked so far and i have no idea what else i can do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Clarification Request
Can you ping any site in a cmd window?
Jul 11, 2017 11:46AM PDT

Open a DOS like cmd window, and type

ping www.cnet.com

Get anything, or fails to acknowledge?

You can also try tracert

tracert www.cnet.com

And Have You Tried This?

If you haven't visited the computer manufacturer or the ethernet card manufacturer's website, please do so. See if there is an updated ethernet driver for your card. Even if there isn't a new one, download the latest driver and install it on your computer.

IN addition, because malware can cause such problems, try clicking on the link and follow ALL of the steps, in the order they're given to check for malware. The tools listed find a LOT more bad stuff than one antivirus software you might have installed.

“Expand” the post titled: "Please try this" at the link below:

If that doesn't get it done, then it's entirely possible the ethernet card is failing. Here, we uninstall/remove the old card, swap in a new card and move on. They're cheap and easy to install.

Hope this helps.

Hello Grif,

Thanks for all the advice. Sadly none of the procedures you listed seem to work, although starting my pc up in safe mode with networking does allow me to connect to the internet.
It may be the ethernet card failing, but i doubt this as well since the whole desktop is reasonably new (less than half a year).
The only option i haven't tried is to contact the card's manufacturers, but i'll try this as well.

You didn't yet answer James' question about ping and tracert. And, if you happen to have a pop3 e-mail you didn't tell if that works.

I don't think it's hardware, if it works in Safe Mode with networking. Then my guess is it's a setting or more likely some software blocking it.

Things to try then:
1. System Restore back to before yesterday
2. Refresh or reset Windows, clean install of Windows, back to factory conditions, back to your most recent working image backup. Begin with the most appropiate one. Be sure you have a backup of everything you don't want to lose.

ping and tracert aren't able to give a connection. What is pop3 email? i dont think i have that either.

Also system restore is always an option but i don't want to run this unless its my last option

hardware problem most likely

However, just to be sure, since some update may have removed your ethernet driver files, go to your computer's manufacture site, find the driver files for the network card and reinstall them. If th at fails, then get a USB to LAN adapter and switch to using it instead.

USB to LAN

won't this still use the network adapter? so if the problem lies with that will a USB to LAN even work?

It would still use the LAN port

on the router. Not on the computer.
