Internet Problem

Jul 28, 2005 6:47AM PDT

About a month ago I was having a problem with my internet, and I knew that I needed to replace my router for other reasons anyway, so I did and the problem went away. Once I installed the new router the problem went away but now after about a fortnight the problem has come back.
The problem is that my internet is very slow and alot of the time the websites i'm trying to get onto will not load. Also when I try and download files from a website they will just stop downloading after about 5-10 minutes but the downloading window stays open. And the most annoying problem is that on MSN it very frequently just signs me in and out for no reason in the middle of conversations, and often I don't recieve messages people send me.
I'm on a network with one other computer, which is also having internet problems.
I'm using:
Windows XP Pro, Ebuyer 4 Port Cable/DSL Broadband Router SBRU-10100.
If any other info is need please just ask.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

What kind of broadband service do you have (cable or ADSL), from whom (ISP), and what kind of cable/DSL modem are you using (brand and model)?

It could very well be that your cable/DSL modem is crapping out or that there is some conflict between the modem settings and the router settings.

I'm using a cable modem Motarola SB4200, and i'm with Telewest Broadband. I've had the modem for about a year, hopefully it aint broken cos I would prefer to not have to replace it obviously. Is there a way to check if it is broken?
Thanks

Actually i've had the modem for about two years not one year like I said. I don't know if that matters or not but I thought I better say.

Spyware

You are suffering from the spite of spyware...

1) goto http://home.trendmicro.com - run a thorough spy/virus check.

2) goto DOS (START>RUN>enter "cmd"). At the prompt enter "start msconfig". Under Startup (tab), how many files have check marks?? Under optimumal conditions, there should be only 3-10 pgms checked. Validity of checked files can be compared against those listed @ sysinfo.org.

Yep I did and that and it's found some Spyware which its got rid of, also i've gone to MSCONFIG and I had about 15 ticks, which i've narrowed down to 5. Hopefully thats should have sorted out my prob, thanks alot and thanks to everyone else who helped.
Oh one other thing, it's not related to this but...whats the best way to clean and CD-RW/DVD laptop drive lens? Is there a kit available in the UK I should get?
Thanks again

Post your drive cleaning question in the Hardware forums, either Notebook or Storage.
