Question

Internet nowhere near the speed im supposed to have.

Aug 23, 2016 5:06PM PDT

Hey Folks,

ive been searching a bit on the internet but it seems like nobody really has the exact same issue as me. So lets cut to the chase.

Ive been going through it with my ISP and as it seems everything is perfectly correct on their side. I got around 8mb/sec download, 0,5mb/sec upload on every speedtest i did so far and traceroutes of 50-70ms on usual internet sites like youtube/google/facebook etc. No paketloss.

But as soon as i start downloading things, from ANY source. Wether it is nvidia graphics drivers, music downloads, games from Blizzard / Ubisoft / Steam. My Downloadrates tumble at around 500kb/sec until 2mb/sec absolute max. Average Downloadspeeds are somwhere from 800kb/sec to 1,2mb/sec.

Im not smart about networking but to my knowledge it cant be that every single server i try to reach is providing me with a bad connection, or could it?

So yeah, im pretty much out of ideas on what to do as im constantly (at least once every 2 days) experiencing high latency, bad download rates, pakage loss etc. and its really getting annoying.

So any help here would be greatly appreciated.

OK, so it's bad.

But I can't find anything about the ISP, type of connection and such.

As it stands you have to ask the ISP to fix it.

Sry my bad
Aug 23, 2016 6:43PM PDT

So things just go clearer.

My IP gets routed from Shaw over Telia, and the route my IP takes is over a bad section of the Telia network which gives me a solid 100% packetloss right off the bat. This seems to causes all the major issues we have in our household. This only appears to take place when trying to stream or download videogame or multimedia content.

contacted Shaw again, and they cant reroute my IP to not take the Telia Servers.
I now contacted Telia to see if they have any chance of rerouting my IP.

If you guys got any idea on this matter, itd be greatly appreciated. Been having these issues now continoously for half a year.

EDIT: Im situated in Canada, and i get rerouted over Telia in Europe for some reason. Route is definitely not the shortest/fastest.

Tell me how you know this?
Aug 23, 2016 7:08PM PDT

No Canadian ISP I know routes off shore. (Sweden)

So I can only guess you are using a VPN or something like that.

Fix? Don't VPN.

Ran Traceroute on it.

Start is in Calgary. Shaw. Target are gameservers in US West. The route is not determined by Shaw as it seems. Rerouting is not possible from their hand.

Looks proper to me

I used http://ping.eu/traceroute/ and that IP address is on a network across the ocean.

So it has to go through telia.

Nothing wrong so far.

Why are you going to 12.123.251.21

Gaming
Aug 24, 2016 9:11AM PDT

This is the IP of a game server located in the West of the US. As im situated in Calgary there should be no need to go across the ocean? Maybe i misunderstood your notion. But even if the route is perfectly valid i still have the problem that it dies on Telias end.

I hope you can post the issue to who owns the server.
Aug 24, 2016 9:27AM PDT

They would have an interest in fixing the route if it's not overseas.

But my trace using many tools sent it through telia.

All this and I'm still guessing why you must use this server. Most games have more than one server.

No other options tbh.

Its the adress for at least HotS and WoW in the US West and Blizzard seems to have some kind of contract running with Telia. Allready contacted Blizz they asked me to ask my ISP if they could reroute me as it appearently is a bad section of Telias network im getting routed through. Shaw told me they cant do that and that i could only wait until this section gets fixed, so i started contacting Telia and they told me they cant reroute me either but they could send an error report if i provide them with evidence that this problem happens constantly. Because Telia says, these issues usually go away after a short time. Ive been having it for about half a year now though. So yeah, thats where im at right now.

So there it is.

"Blizzard seems to have some kind of contract running with Telia."

There are forums full of gamers going on and on about ping, lag and such in games. Here, I hear the same and when I see this I have some generic things I try.

1. Don't use WiFI. Turn it off on the router, and even go direct via Ethernet to the modem. If that's not good enough, it's either the game server, your ISP or your PC.

2. Change the DNS. Use http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16372/find-a-faster-dns-server-with-namebench/ to find out how to do this.

Let me share how I traced.
Aug 24, 2016 2:23PM PDT

I tried it from my home connection which is TWC in SoCal, USA.
I tried it from various web trace sites which gives us a way to test it from other places in the world.

Result? All went to Telia then to the IP address you gave me to trace.

THAT IP ADDRESS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE IN North America.

Do you have another to test with?

US Central instead of US West Servers
Aug 25, 2016 5:55AM PDT

199.108.62.157 this would be the other option. If i pathping it from my home desktop it results in 100% packetloss aswell. Also Telia.

When i asked Blizzard now why my access to US Servers gets routed overseas, they just cancelled my ticket. Great support. Gonna contact them by phone and see what those pricks have to say to it.
