Internet nightmare

Apr 27, 2009 9:29PM PDT

This morning, when I got up my internet connection was gone. The network connection pane tells me that there are no wireless networks in range, but the router is in the same room and I'm pretty sure it works. I have no idea what the issue is, nor how it was caused.

However, last night I was doing this to fix an issue in Word: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940791

I don't know if this has any affect; I don't remember doing anything else system-wide last night, except for an AVG 8.5 virus scan which removed a couple of trojans in what I had downloaded.

Does anyone have any leads/possible solutions?

SYSTEM: Apple Intel 2.66 GHz C2D iMac (April 2008 version, standard configuration) running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit. Broadcom network adapter receiving from a Linksys Wireless-G adapter.

Think it might have missed one of more?

Drivers may not be compatible with a Windows OS. Running Windows on a Mac can be done but it is a "work around" and will lead to trouble. Trouble, like the trouble your in.

No, I downloaded the file about a week ago, so it would've had its affect by now.

The drivers were working fine until today.

Trojan removal...

The Word fix would not cause such a problem, so that can safely be ruled out.

The trojan removal, however, can cause such a problem; such malware can modify system files which, when cleaned/quarantined/deleted by security software, can potentially leave you unable to access the internet. Consider it a 'parting gift' of sorts. System File Checker is one of the easiest potential solutions to missing/corrupt system files.

Before going through repair and troubleshooting procedures, though, I'd verify that internet connection is actually up and running and that your computer still has authorization to use the network.

I figured it out: I just had to manually enter the router info and then reboot. Thanks to all who helped.
