Question

Internet Isuue

Aug 17, 2016 4:29AM PDT

I have an HP Pavilion. Basic model. It came with Windows 8 and I upgraded to 10 a few months ago. All of a sudden, for 2 days now, I have no internet. I connect to my wifi router but have no internet. All my other devices are fine, so I know it's the comp. I'm not a complete moron when it comes to computers, but I'm certainly no expert. I've tried different fixes I've found online but none have worked. Any help would be super appreciated.

Any Norton, McAfee, Kapersky? Other?
Aug 17, 2016 8:48AM PDT

I find those 3 and maybe others block the web on expiry. As I've written before, thuggish behavior.

No Anti Virus
Aug 17, 2016 9:35AM PDT

I might have Malware Bytes. I'd actually have to check when I get home. But aside from the default anti virus, Malware Bytes would be the only other one I have.

Not even Windows Defender?

That's living dangerously. Try the browser resets and be sure it's set to no proxy.

Since Windows Defender is free and scores have improved I can't imagine running a PC without protection.

I think I have Windows Defender

I think that's the default that came with the computer.

Nothing Works
Aug 18, 2016 2:51AM PDT

I accidentally hit resolved on a reply, but nothing has worked. I don't understand how I turn on the comp one morning and no more internet. Very very frustrating. I have tried everything I could find online as a fix. Nothing has worked. I am clueless.

More Details
Aug 18, 2016 3:39AM PDT

Hey guys, I really appreciate the help. I'm going to try and give as many details as I can. Please bear with me, I'm definitely an amateur with computers. I bought the basic HP Pavilion refurbished from Amazon around Thanksgiving last year. It came with Win8. Around February I took the free Win 10 upgrade. I have had no issues or problems at all. Monday everything was fine. Tuesday, out of nowhere, I turn on the comp and no internet. Wifi connection to the router is fine, but no internet. I rebooted the router. I tried forgetting my network and reconnecting. I turned off the firewall. I tried netsh commands to reset IP. Nothing has worked. I have no virus software like Norton. Just the basic one that came with the comp. I don't surf the web, do online banking or shopping on this comp. It is strictly for games. Every diagnostic I've run tells me the issue is with the router. Yet all my other devices are fine. If I can't figure this out, I'll just hardwire the thing. I'm trying to avoid that as this area of the house is not wired and would cost me. I just am befuddled at how this just happened out of nowhere.

Answer
Which Browser Are You Using?
Aug 17, 2016 9:08AM PDT

Tried resetting them yet? Or at least try connecting with a different browser? For example to re-set Internet Explorer, open the Control Panel, then Internet Options, then the "Advanced" tab, then click on the "Re-set" button, then Apply, OK.l

Also, have you tried scanning for malware with something other than your onboard antivirus? The link below will walk you through specific steps that should find any malware.

Chrome
Aug 17, 2016 9:42AM PDT

I haven't tried a different browser other than Chrome. But I have a couple of game clients that won't connect either. The wifi icon in the bottom right of the screen has a yellow triangle with an exclamation point. Not sure if that matters. I'm really not a computer expert. Sorry if I'm newbish.

Now that you told me about the WiFi icon
Aug 17, 2016 9:50AM PDT

My thoughts have changed. I'd still scan for bad things but I'd reboot all my internet routers, modems and then on my W10 machine FORGET the connection and connect up again.

Be sure the date and time is set right as well.

Will try!
Aug 17, 2016 10:01AM PDT

Thanks. As soon as I get home from work I'll try. Just a quick question. This comp originally had W8. I took the free upgrade to 10 a few months ago. Since I've had no problems till now, I doubt that the upgrade caused this. However, would going back to 8 help?

I can't predict the result.
Aug 17, 2016 10:06AM PDT

But I've found that going back for most is a lot of work that rarely solves the issue.

If I was there I'd reboot/restart/power off/on all the gear, forget this connection and try connecting again.

There are folk that turn on the router firewall, but you run your network so keep an eye out for router changes.

A new test.
Aug 18, 2016 7:56AM PDT

Connect this PC to your router with Ethernet.

I re-read all the posts up to this point and have not found the exact model HP we are working on. But for now a test is needed. Get wired. If wired, try the WiFi.
