1. Since we cannot see a members computer from here to ascertain what exactly is or has been installed, we must rely on the question content to attempt a qualifying response. Many unclear or questions void of useful information may get skipped.

2. In order for us to analyze a potential problem and offer tips, a question should state the exact system error(s) - spelled, spaced and capitalized just as it is shown on the display -- used to inform a user of a problem.

a. Please! Do not paraphrase an error message. Report errors verbatim. Most errors: 1) usually list and describe standard default error messages - written within the program code and generally recognized by most "Gurus" and 2) the troubleshooting techniques may be published and explained in the Microsoft Knowledge Base (MSKB) library for the Windows operating systems, and search for with accurately reported information.

b. If an error message is displayed -- besides that which may be listed in the Details section (when provided) are not verbatim, -- misspelling, incorrectly listed, not listed at all, or is incomplete, anyone trying to make sense of or use it to search the Internet isn't going to come up with useful material -- for YOU. Believe me. Correct and complete information is vital if informative help and answers are what you seek.

c. When an error is not displayed, please give information in full details of what was being done, how the system was responding - if at all, and the program/application being used at the time. Note also this could mean a particular device in use or one recently installed. Sometime the program/application version information is important.

I am not a computer expert, sorry! I listed the error message exactly as it appears. I get booted off the internet every time. Which has happened twice as I was trying to respond to your message.

I am running Windows Me (AMD Athlon Processor). I have already tried going Add/Remove, selecting Internet Explorer 6 SP1 & internet tools, chose Fix and I still get the same error message when I log onto the internet.

Any help is appreciated!

Not really, but let me show you something please:

1. Bold/highlight the first word (lexplore) in your reported error message and then in the Toolbar, click Edit, Copy.

2. Access the "Microsoft Library" using this link and in the box labeled "This exact phrase:", paste this word there (Edit, Paste), and then press Enter.

3. You'll receive one result only "169549 - OFF97: Information About the Microsoft Office ValuPack". Please mouse-click this hiperlink to display the article content. From the Toolbar again, click Edit, Find (on This Page). Again, paste this word from the clipboard into the Find what: box, and then press Enter.

4. Please note the word actually found in that article and you'll be surprised.

I show you this only because users make it harder to receive valid/comprehensive feedback simply because they make it harder than it really is.

Pev,

First, because viruses or spyware can cause this error to occur, please use the links below:

Start by using the free online scans provided at the links below:

If you come up clean, and because there have been problems with Windows Me and Internet Explorer 6, then I recommend uninstalling IE 6, then reinstall IE 5.5 SP2. There are no guarantees, but Windows ME has had problems with IE6. Windows ME is the only remaining installation for IE 5.5 SP2 from Microsoft and it's because of these types of problems. Here's the download link, just in case you want it:

Hope this helps.

How do you access the IE 5.5 SP2 if you delete IE 6? I guess I don't understand if your uninstalling the internet browser, how do you get a browser to download the other one? I know this sounds like a stupid question to you, but this newbie has NO CLUE! thanks!

Arlene,

There are a number of different ways.

The easiest, if it will allow, is to simply uninstall IE6 and the machine will revert to the previous version, which is hopefully IE 5.5 SP2. (Make sure to download a full version using the instructions below, just in case that doesn't work. BE PREPARED for the worst.)

Another way is to download the full IE 5.5 SP2 by doing a "Custom" install with IE 6. AFter visitng the download site for IE 5.5SP2 and downloading the small "setup" file, then running it. You should be able to then select the "Custom" install, at which time you can choose to do a "full" download which simply downloads the entire package to your desktop.

Or, you should be able to use another browser that has the ability to run ActiveX and you can install IE 5.5 SP2.

Or, you can download the full IE 5.5 SP2 version from the link below:

http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit

Hope this helps.

Is IE 5 installed?
May 28, 2004 11:11PM PDT

What's the easiest way to tell if IE 5 is already installed on my computer?

- Collapse -
Arlene, Open Internet Explorer, click on 'Help' ....
May 30, 2004 9:38AM PDT

....in the upper left corner, choose "About Internet Explorer" and the version number will be listed. If SP2 is installed, it will be listed first in the "Update Versions" portion.

It will also be listed in the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section as "Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools", except the specific version and Service Packs aren't easily found there.

Hope this helps.

Ok, it's IE 6, now what? More stupid questions
May 30, 2004 12:17PM PDT

I don't see IE 5.5, so should I download that first? Or should I be brave and see if removing IE6 takes me back to a pre-problematic version? I doubt that can happen, nothing is ever easy on this machine. IE is only ONE of my problems.
I often get a system halt at startup because my boot drive is not found. I'd like to upgrade this computer, but I'm not sure how to do it and keep all my programs.
If I can put all my programs on a CD, can I put them into a new computer? Silly question, right? But, being clueless is why I'm asking!
OH, and it's Darlene. I didn't log in right, so I got a funky sign in name......haha

DARLENE, ;-)) Your Next Step...
May 31, 2004 8:21AM PDT

...would be to download the full installer version of Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 using the instructions that I posted earlier. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Still, if you're getting a number of errors at start up, have you tried using System Restore???, or better yet, tried using a "Recovery CD" IF you have it??? If it came with the computer, a Recovery CD will restore you computer back to "factory" condition. You wouldn't need to uninstall IE 6 as it should take your programs back to their original state.

If you have extra programs that you have installed, you'll need the "original" installers in order to replace them on your condtion. IF you have those "installers", such as a CD, or downloaded .exe installer file, you CAN burn it to a Cd and it will install on the "upgraded" machine. (If you upgrade to something like Windows XP, you'll need to make sure the program is XP compliant.)

If you want to revert to IE 5.5 SP2, listed below are two locations for the full download:

As mentioned earlier, in order to get the "Full" download with this first link, download the first "ie5setup.exe" file to your computer by clicking on the "Download" link on the page. After the small 500 kb file has been downloaded to your desktop, double click on the file to start it, accept the license, then choose the "Custom" installation. When that loads, choose the "Full" download option and it should load the entire installation package for you. It should be installable offline.
Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and Internet Tools for Windows Me

This link provides a complete "full" installer file simply by clicking on the "5.5 SP2" link:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit

After you've got the IE 5.5 SP2 installer on your desktop, THEN you should try removing the IE6 from the Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs section. It should revert to the previous version of Internet Explorer, which should be IE 5.5 SP2. If not, use the installer files.

Hope this helps.
