Internet Explorer won't connect to sites

Dec 26, 2003 11:26AM PST

Hello,

My buddies computer(Win98SE, P1 233, Explorer 5.0)will not load web sites. He uses dial up and the Winmodem tested good in Diagnostics. The modem dials the ISP and connects well. His network settings seem properly configued with the proper DNS settings.
When Explorer is opened it always gives a DNS error.
I am sorry but I don't have the exact error, but am sure that it mentions a "DNS error could not open the page". It does not lock up.

I tried closing all background programs with similar results.

I found two viruses on the system.
One was I-worm bugbear (Bugbear32) and the other was Startpage virus.
I used the Symantec fixbugbear tool and ran it in Safe Mode to remove the virus. It completed successfully. The antivirus I installed (AVG)was able to remove the Startpage virus.
AVG is updated and does not find any other viruses.
It still won't load the web pages.

I then tried reinstalling Win98 on top of itself.
No change.
Other then a full format and reinstall of Windows can you think of what else I could try?

Thanks
Mike

The article "Troubleshooting Browsing Error Messages in Microsoft Internet Explorer" describes the steps you can use to troubleshoot the following error messages:

1. The Page Cannot Be Displayed.

2. Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site Web address. A connection with the server could not be established.

3. The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

4. Cannot find server or DNS Error.

5. An internal error occurred in Windows Internet extensions.

Mike, You may want to go to the link below, read the page and the lspfix.txt file at the bottom then download & run the LSPFix.exe file. If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer and download the LSPFix.exe onto a floppy disc then transfer the floppy to the problem computer and run it.
