Internet Explorer problem

Sep 8, 2005 7:01AM PDT

My PC is running Windows XP Home Edition (with SP2). It has several user accounts, for myself and members of the family. Suddenly I am unable to open Internet Explorer from my account, although it opens OK from every other account. The error I get is

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

Any advice on how to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Colin, Have You Tried Installing A Secondary Browser?
Sep 8, 2005 8:07AM PDT

Something such as Firefox or Mozilla is free and works great. If IE takes a dive, at least you have a backup browser to access the internet. Download it to the computer using one of the other accounts, then install if from there. YOu'll need to install it from an account with admin rights.

It certainly would be a good idea to get a second opinion on your virus and spyware status. Please click on either, or both of the links below and run the free onlines scanners they provide:

Housecall Online Scanner

Panda Online Scanner

Next, if you haven't already, please download, install, update, then run ALL of the free spyware removal tools from the links below:

Secondary Browser

Grif - thanks for your help - yes I have installed Netscape 8, which works fine. My anti-virus softaware is up to date and I use spybot regularly. I'll run the others to see if that helps.

''Default browser''
Sep 9, 2005 9:52PM PDT

This issue can generally occur if Internet Explorer is not set as the default browser -- the browser started when using the WEB (click Start, Settings, Control Panel, double-click Internet Options, then on the Programs tab click to select the Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser check box, and then click Apply. Start Internet Explorer and then when asked if you want to make Internet Explorer your default browser, click Yes, [Q284456]) or Internet Explorer has been damaged (the Repair Internet Explorer tool is found in the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Internet Tools option in the Add/Remove Programs tool).

Re: Default Browser

I've tried everything that's been suggested before. The default browser idea didn't work. IE was my only browser when the problem started. This has to be a problem with my XP user account as the other 4 users on the PC can all use IE with no problems - any ideas?

Here's the fix

It's caused by the Google toolbar. Uninstall it.

Spot-on Solution

Thanks for the tip. I disabled (rather than uninstalled) the 'Google toolbar helper' and Internet Explorer now works again. This is strange as I had the Google toobar for months before it stopped working, so either there's a problem with a recent updated version or it clashes with something else I installed recently (Bluetooth adaptor?, which is working fine). Anyway I'm happy to have IE working again on my account - Thanks

In Tools/Internet Options/ Advanced, UNCHECK Enable third-party browser extensions.

I found that tip somewhere on the net.
