Internet Explorer not opening pages ...

Sep 27, 2005 6:54AM PDT

Hello. 3 days ago, I opened IE and tried to open a page. It did not work. Then, I tried looking at the options, but it wouldn't open. I switched my user-account and there, the options opened, but the page still did not. So whenever I type an address or try to open a page, it won't work. The hour-glass shows up, but nothing else. Right now, I have to use my back-up, Opera. But I feel more comfortable using IE, plus most sites work best with it, plus I need IE for Windows Update. All other browsers are working - Mozilla Navigator, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera, but IE won't work. This is been happening when I use my Quick Launch Button. But when I use the non-shortcut .exe file found on the desktop, it shows a message: This is being run in compatibility mode and not all features are enabled.
This is the only difference, else is the same.
(IE6, WINXPSP2)

I really need help guys, thanks!

Try...

Given the error message you receive from using the icon on the desktop (note: that, too, should be a shortcut), try navigating to "local drive:\Program Files\internet explorer," right-clicking iexplorer(.exe), selecting properties, selecting the "compatibility" tab, and unchecking the box next to "run this program in compatibility mode for." Go ahead and uncheck any other boxes that are checked, "OK" your way out, and try loading Internet Explorer again, rebooting first if needed. If that doesn't work, click here for instructions of how to repair/reinstall Internet Explorer in Windows XP.

Hope this helps,
John

And ..
Sep 27, 2005 7:21AM PDT

In studying the links I gave I noticed that the repair method using Config Panel I mentioned isn't given there. But I think it should work also. From Add Remove Software select Microsoft Internet Explorer and click on Add/Remove. Then choose Repair.

And a freeware download IEFIX is often mentioned in this forum. But I think it's essentially the same as method #2 from the link I gave.

Of course, the check by John (Mousearoma) for the compatibility mode checkbox in the shortcut is a very good idea also. But - not being a XP expert at all - I trusted google.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, But ...
Sep 30, 2005 8:01AM PDT

I really apreciate all your help guys, and that you spent time reading my problem, but without even thinking about it, I just pressed Reset Web Settings ... in the programs tab in option in tools, and IE is back to normal! Even though I checked the settings in IE, there did not seem to be a problem with the settings, but after the reset, everthing is normal again. Thanks anyways!
