Internet Explorer Language Encoding

Nov 28, 2004 1:19AM PST

I have IE version 6.0.2900.xxxxxx.

When I open a WEB page that displays a foreign language (Spanish, German, French, etc.) I cannot get the page to open in English.

I thought that if "Encoding" is turned on under View>Encoding>Autoselect or Windows (Wester Europe) I would automatically get the WEB page converted to English but it does not.

IE>Help states that if the language is not in my system (Windows XP Home Edition) it will automatically direct me to a "IE Encoding Language" site to download the language. It does not.

Two Questions:

1) If Language Encoding IS currently operational and set up correctly on my system, will English not be displayed unless the foreign language WEB site is multi lingual to begin with?

2) Where can I find the "IE Encoding Language Download Page" that IE refers to in their Help Menu? I've tried finding it on the Microsoft WEB site and have had no luck.

Thanks for your input roddy32.

I've tried each of the option offered by that IE Help information. But it does not point to a link to acually download IE Encoding Language Pack. I just can't seem to locate that link.

Perhaps if someone clicks on View>Encoding and gets a "download here" message, perhaps they can click on the link and supply the WEB address here.

Thanks for your help!

Hopefully someone else with more experience with this can help you Jerry. I am a little confused as to how this problem started originally though.

Suppose that besides English you know another language. You acess a web site designed designed in that language. If you don?t have that charcter set you?ll be invited to download it. However, the final page will be displayed in that language and not translated in English. So, you?ll be able to read and understand the content only if you know that language.

Some foreign (i.e. not English sites) are designed in bilingual view (local and let?s say English). Each page is stored on the web site?s server in both local and English. In other words the content it?s not automatically translated. It is deliverd from either the local language page or English page (depending of the original selection).

Good Luck,
