Question

Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) is missing in Windows 10

The iexplore.exe files are missing from my Windows 10 system. I have looked in the internet explorer folders and they are not there. This is not an issue where IE11 needs to be selected as a feature. The files are missing. Does anyone know how I can replace them?

Missing Files

In reply to: And you are complaining?!

Thanks for the quick reply. I've tried all the stuff in the attachment. The files are not there. The folders are there, but not the iexplore.exe files. I didn't remove them.

Do you have your windows set to "hide system files"? If so, that may be why you aren't seeing it.

How Did They Disappear?

In reply to: Internet Explorer (iexplore.exe) is missing in Windows 10

Here, on this Windows 10 Pro X64, I see "iexplore.exe" in two directories:

C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer

C:\Program Files(x86)\Internet Explorer

They don't just disappear on their own and since they're part of the operating system in most countries, it's not that easy to delete them.. Something must have occurred to cause their removal. Some clues from you would help. Do you live in a country where Internet Explorer was removed by Microsoft because of government requirements?

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm in the US so no govt exclusion. It's not that I can''t find them or that IE fails somehow. The iexplore files are just missing.

So IE does not fail?

In reply to: Missing Files

It's possible and more likely that permissions are in play here.

Unlike it was decades ago, NTFS may not show files to us. If Internet Explorer works then it's just another case where File Explorer is not showing files.

Why this is may not be covered here due to how we have to dive into a class on NTFS, permission, Windows File Explorer and more.

-> So can you share what issue you are working here outside of looking for iexplore.exe?

Re: missing files

In reply to: Missing Files

Five possible fixes:
1. Look for them in the recycle bin
2. Run sfc /scannow (note the space) from command prompt in administrator mode.
3. Manually copy them from the WinSxS folder (I think that's what #1 does automatically)
4. Copy them from any other Windows 10 PC
5. System restore back to when they still were present

Might help. If not refresh Windows 10 from the recovery drive you made or (if you forgot to make that) the Windows 10 install disk or stick you can make with the Windows Media Creation Tool.

Apparently It IS Important That You Can't Find Them

In reply to: Missing Files

If they're missing, then you can't find them. But it seems like they aren't missing. How are you looking for them? If you've looked in the folders I mentioned above and there is no "iexplore.exe" in those locations, but Internet Explorer actually works correctly, then they must be hidden some how or located in a location where one wouldn't normally look. It could be permissions, as Bob mentioned earlier, or maybe something else.

If you open File Explorer, then type "iexplore.exe" in the upper right corner search line, does something show up which would give you a clue where they are? (Remember you must enable "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" and UNCHECK the box that says: "Hide Extensions for known file types" in the Control Panel-File Explorer Options-View tab.)

Have you installed Windows 10 as a secondary operating system in a dual OS system? Something else?

Hope this helps and let us know.

IE Missing

In reply to: Apparently It IS Important That You Can't Find Them

Thanks for the reply. No, the files are not there. Win 10 reports that it cannot find the files. I've done searches and have run the sfc tool.. I have not looked for the winsxs folder. I'll try that.

It's been a while....sorry. As it turns our I will need to reinstall Win 10 on a new HD. So, this question is moot. The files really weren't there, but it doesn't matter now. Thanks for everyone's input. We can always count on this forum for assistance,.

If you are facing Internet Explorer error or you can't find your default internet browser then you should check the following things such as if you have genuine window 10 CD then you must re-install the windows 10 and if the problem persists then you should contact Microsoft for the right solution. The second Option is that If you have pirated CD then You must change Your CD with a new one or with a genuine one.
