Internet Explorer 8 Toolbar color changer

Mar 27, 2009 10:52PM PDT

Simple question with some background, I avoided IE7 for a lot of reasons, one of which was inability to change the toolbar color from 'Bleah' to something else. On my test machine I find I could just about like IE8 except that I'm still unable to change toolbar color. Searching hasn't produced a workable answer yet, anyone got this sorted yet?

Well- I found a partial solution

I can get the toolbar-explorer-address bars to change colors by installing the Crystal xp Bricapack, then change the theme to one of the online packages like 'Forever Blue 2' or 'Nightshades'. beats that expanse of ugly gray.

It might be helpful to look for skins or GUI modified versions of your browser, some people on the internet like the same likeness as you.. I sure would like to change mine as well.

After many days

I can say I'm very - very happy with using the Crystal xp and the Themes route to change that horrible BLAH toolbar on IE8. The browser works well enough and if nothing terrible shows up in another week-I'm going to put IE8 on another of my computers and see how it goes there. I did try removing IE8 back to the slightly modified 6 I've had for ever so long and even that was nearly painless.

Reinstall a theme

Download something like 'Nightshades' or 'Forever blue', install and then work thru the themes settings in the display properties wizard. No idea what you did to cause it.

Windows themes in General-
May 8, 2009 7:13AM PDT

I have 'Nightshades', 'ForeverBlue', Foreverblue 2, and a bunch of others- just search 'Windows XP themes' and try a few. My current long term favorite is Nightshades in the display properties 'Appearance' tabs. Shades IE8 nicely and the rest of the theme makes windows pages stand out.

A few notes...
May 8, 2009 10:15AM PDT

1.) IE8 does not support themes...it uses the Windows theme, whichever one you have applied.
2.) Third-party Windows XP themes require you to patch related operating system files before they will work.
3.) Patching is typically safe, and is not prohibited, but there are slight risks involved. (Incorrectly-patched theme files can cause Explorer to fail to load.)

Any additional questions regarding theme file patching should be referred to the Windows XP forum.

Keep it simple, folks...

Black toolbars. Something has disturbed your current settings, you simply right-click desktop, select Properties, Themes tab should show and you will see something like Windows XP (modified). Just select Windows XP and wait a good few seconds and voila all will be OK. Similarly for non-XP.
