General discussion

Internet Explorer

Sep 5, 2011 4:36AM PDT

I cannot access IE on my computer even though updates are received for it, most recently on June 16, 2011.

When I tried to download either IE 8 or IE 9 the message indicates I already have a newer version on my computer.

According to the update section I have IE 9.

Any recommendations will be greatly appreciated.

1. Find c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe in Explorer.
2. Run it by doubleclicking. What happens?

I could not find any lines with exe. as the suffix.

I would send some examples except I can't seem to copy lines from the that page.

Head over to the Control Panel, then "Folder Options" and open.

In the new window, click the "View" tab. Then find the entry for "Hidden files and folders" and underneath that, select "Show hidden files, folders and drives", (your system may only be "Show hidden files and folders").

Then find the entry for "Hide extensions for known file types" and de-select that.

Click Apply then OK.

Now try again to search for iexplore.exe .

Thanks for your response.

I did as you suggested and none of the extensions shown are exe

I then ran the search function with iexplore.exe and it brought up iexplore.exe.mui.

Because I am really a novice I did not attempt to open it or do anything with it so far.

Re: no exe's
Sep 5, 2011 5:32AM PDT

That's strange. I have 6 exe's there, all from 6-4-2011 (extexport, iecleanup, iediagcmd, ieinstal, ielowutil, iexplore). Don't have the faintest idea what they do there.

See if you can copy them from any other PC that has IE9, if they aren't in the recycle bin.
And try finding out why they are gone. Malware? Somebody deleted them? Hard drive failing?

I just ran a search in IE for exe only and the following appeared:

Ext.Export.exe
ielowutil.exe
ieinstall.exe
iexplore.exe
iediagcmd.exe
iecleanup.exe
ielowutil.exe.mui
ieinstall.exe.mui
iexplore.exe.mui

Does this help you make an analysis of whatever problem I have?

So you found iexplore.exe.
Sep 5, 2011 6:27AM PDT

Great. Now doubleclick it and tell what happens. That might help to analyse your problem.

If really nothing happens, try running it from the command prompt and see if there happens to be an error message then.
Running a program from the command prompt isn't exactly what people nowadays are used to (everybody did before Windows 3.1 appeared 20 years ago), so if you need instructions for that, please post again. I don't mind at all to explain, if it's necessary. It's great (really!) that you know how to search for exe's only (*.exe), but command prompt is somewhat more than that.

Thanks for your continuing efforts on my behalf.

I did double-click on several of the lines and in most instances I received a message block stating "Internet Explorer has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is found"

I have received this same message before and no solution was forthcoming.

The second response from clicking on one of the lines seemed to come from Yahoo and stated that the page you requested has not been found.

Regarding the command prompt is something I am not at all familiar with so your step by step instructions would be very helpful.

Because I usually don't use the computer over the week-end I probably won't let you know the results until next week one day.

Something else to try.
Sep 10, 2011 5:31AM PDT

It seems IE works sometimes but not others.

Try this. Open IE without add-ons. To do that, go to Start > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > "Internet Explorer (No Add-Ons)".

This will open IE in its default state that had disabled all add-ons. If your IE works in this state, then you know that it is an add-on that is causing all the problems and you can then re-open IE normally and try an elimination test to find the offending add-on(s).

Tried your suggestion and received the following response -"Internet Explorer is currently running without add-ons".

Although it was indicated to be running I could not find any way to actually utilize it. In other words there was no area to enter a web site.

Do you think it is possible that IE has been hi-jacked on my computer and it is being used by someone else at the same time I am using Firefox or Chrome? How could I check if this is possible?

I have done a full scan with both Avast and SuperAntiSpyware and nothing showed up.

Thanks again.

Not sure I understand.
Sep 19, 2011 8:27PM PDT

Can you describe this a bit more please?

With IE's (No-Addons) running, are you saying that there is no Address Bar where you can type in something like www.google.com?

If so, is this IE window full size covering the whole of the monitor screen? If that is the case, press F11 on the keyboard. Does that display the address bar? If it does then it should also display the top right hand buttons for Minimize, Reduce, and Close. Click the middle button.

If F11 does nothing, point the mouse cursor up to the top of the screen and see if you get the same effect.

I guess I was in error in that there is an address bar but it is only 4 or 5 inches in length compared the address bars I was familiar with which are almost 3/4 of the screen in length and very obvious.

After putting a web site into the small area I was able to get to the web site so it looks as if the add-on omission was a very good suggestion.

Do you have any ideas on how I can obtain a normal length address bar and get rid of the add-on that is causing the access to be so complicated.

Thanks very much for your continuing efforts.

Sep 26, 2011 8:41PM PDT

I am replying to your post at http://forums.cnet.com/7726-7574_102-5208717.html as the forum code restricts sub-threads to about 12 posts.

I have an idea about the Address Bar length. You say it is only 4 or 5 inches long. Is this because there is a Search Bar just to the right of it? If not a search bar, what is there?

If you place your mouse cursor to the right hand end of the Address Bar, watch for the cursor to change shape to a <--> type shape. When you see that, hold down the left hand mouse button and 'drag' to the right.

Does that help?

When I click in the address area it turns blue and shows http://en.us.acer.yahoo.com.

After the 4-5 inch address area there is a tab headed with a Yahoo symbol and the word Yahoo, then an Acer tab (my computer is an Acer) and then just black space all the way to the right.

I tried positioning the cursor in various places on the right side of the address bar and nothing happened.

When I click on the X on the Yahoo tab the tab disappears together with IE. Clicking on the Acer tab X just causes that tab to disappear.

I uninstalled the Yahoo Tool Bar several weeks ago. I just checked the Programs and Features section from the Control Panel and the Yahoo Tool Bar is no longer there. There is an icon that says Yahoo Search Protection (516kb) and another which says Yahoo Software Update (692kb). I don't have anyway of knowing if these are contributing to the problem and whether removing them would pose any kind of problem because I really don't know what they are for.

As always, I appreciate your efforts.

Can you supply a screenshot?
Sep 30, 2011 5:22AM PDT

I can't visualize this.

Can you open your browser then supply a PrintScreen shot of the full browser window? These forums don't allow images to be posted so we have to workaround that by uploading the image to some image hosting site, like ImageShack, Flickr, PhotoBucket, etc, then posting a link to that full sized image here.

But not FaceBook or any other social network sites. Not of us all are members.

I can fully understand why you can't visualize my description of how my access to IE looks on the screen.

If it helps I am using Firefox right now and at the top of the screen it shows File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tool and Help. The IE page does not have any of those menu options.

Unfortunately I do not know how to upload a screen shot to an image hosting site, nor do I know how to establish a link.

I am probably going to have to just work with it the way it is and deal with the inconvenience. At least I can use IE from time to time thanks to your advice.

All of your help on this matter has been greatly appreciated!

How to provide a screen print
Oct 6, 2011 9:45PM PDT

This is how to supply a screen print.

1] Open your Internet Explorer as you would usually. Maximise it so it fills the screen.

2] Press the "Print Screen/SysReq" button on the keyboard.

I don't know whether you are using a laptop or not and if so which make and model, but if you are, the Print Screen key may need an additional key to be pressed as well, like the Fn or CTRL key.

Doing that creates a copy in memory.

3] Minimise the browser window then go to Start > All Programs > Accessories, find "Paint" and click. This will open Microsoft's Paint application.

4] Press CTRL + v . Best way is to hold down the CTRL key then press the " v " key on the keyboard. Then release both keys. The screen copy should then appear inside the Paint window.

5] Go to File > Save as and click. If this is the new version of Paint you will see a small icon top left hand side, just to the left of the "Home - View" menu options. Mouse down to "Save as".

If you see options to select which format, select "JPEG Picture".

6] A new window will open. Navigate to Desktop. Then where it says "File name" type in a short file name. Where it says "Save as type" make sure JPEG is selected. Then click the Save button. When done you can close down Paint.

7] That file should now be on your Desktop.

Cool Open the browser, (or maximise it again), and go to http://imageshack.us/

9] When ImageShack is fully loaded, click the Browse button, then use that to navigate to your Desktop and highlight the file you have just created. Click that file and if necessary click "Open".

10] Now click the "Upload" button on the web site. Your image should now upload to ImageShack.

11] When done the web page will change to give you a list of options. However all you need is to click on the image to enlarge it. Now, copy the web address that is in the address bar.

12] In a new browser window, (don't close down this ImageShack window just yet), return to this forum and click Reply to this post. Type a subject then in the main body of the reply window simply paste the link you have just copied.

13] Preview your post and in the preview click the link you have just provided to see if the link works and to see if the image is large enough for others to see properly. If all is fine, click Submit.

I hope that helps.

Happy

Can we recap?

Thanks for the image. I just tested on my IE9. Along the top you have the Back and Forward buttons, then a small address bar, then a Yahoo tab then another tab. I can't quite see the words on it, but it seems like Acer.com

Can you take your mouse cursor and place it in-between the address bar and the first tab. You can see there is a very small gap. Does the cursor change from an arrow to a double arrow, like <-> ?

If so, can you hold down the left mouse button and 'drag' towards the right?

That should enlarge the address bar.

About that image. It seems fine to me as it is a Yahoo page that simply says it can't find the page you were looking for. Did you say you had any other problems?

IE Problem
Nov 2, 2011 5:47AM PDT

Thanks very much.

I did put the cursor in the area you suggested and a double arrow appeared I then right clicked and was offered a number of options and I was able to make the IE page look more like the page I have with Firefox.

I hate to bother you with another question but I'm wondering if you know how I can rid the page of the "Yahoo-Sorry the page you requested was not found" result whenever I open IE?

Other than that I can say thanks again for helping me resolve the IE problem.

No, not right click
Nov 2, 2011 6:34AM PDT

Not right click.

Place the mouse cursor where I said and it should change to a <-> cursor.

Now, LEFT CLICK and hold the left mouse button down.

Drag the mouse towards the right.

Let's sort that before thinking about the Yahoo page. Happy

Good luck.

Sorry for the late response.I tried what you suggested and was unable to place the curser in that location with the result you indicated.I then took another screen shot of the IE page and uploaded it to Image Shack but I cannot seem to be able to create a link to that page. Any
suggestions on creating the link will be appreciated. I did try to
follow you earlier suggestions of Oct. 7 but I must be omitting a step
as I have had no success in establishing the link in blue as I did the
last time.

Jacque2010 -- u say in the last paragraph of your reply
Oct 6, 2011 11:57PM PDT

that you don't know some things about your programs. Why then don't your type those program names into a search engine and read about their functions and use and whether they are worth keeping? For instance, you say you uninstalled the Yahoo Tool Bar. Then from what I read at "this site", you might as well remove both the Yahoo Search Protection (516kb) and Yahoo Software Update (692kb) since they are only useful when the Yahoo Tool Bar is resident and used.

Thanks for you comments.
