Internet, email access problem

Aug 1, 2007 6:44AM PDT

My desktop computer has stopped connecting to the web and to my email account. Last night it worked fine; today nothing. I have checked my settings and everything is OK - IP address, etc. and my modem is configured correctly. I called my ISP techie, and he said the DSL line is functioning and I'm online. My wireless connection is obviously working. The only thing that seems to have changed is the McAfee downloaded a very large update (took about 20 minutes) this morning and installed it; after that I couldn't get on the internet or open email. I hadn't tried either before the loaded though. Could it be related to the download - e.g., the installation changed some setting or messed with the registry? I'm not savvy enough about all this to diagnose it, so appreciate any suggestions.

McAfee firewall?

Check your settings in McAfee and see whether it is allowing your browsers to access the internet. The same for your email software.

McAfee Firewall

I'll try that; it seems probable as my laptop doesn't use McAfee and still works fine.

Are you using

an email program, like Outlook Express or using the web browser?

I just had to rest the Internet Options in my daughters computer, in order for her to be able to send emails using Netscape browser.

I'm using Mozilla for the browser and Outlook Express for the mail. I have checked internet options and everything's OK there. Thanks for the suggestion; I'll keep looking.

Try removing the update in add/remove to see if any changes occur.

If the firewall isn't the problem I will remove the update, as that is the only thing that changed. Thanks -
