Question

Internet d/c only when download/stream

Dec 17, 2016 5:50PM PST

Hi all,

I am at my wits end here. I have Brighthouse (Spectrum) internet just as an FYI. Ever since a few weeks ago, out of nowhere, I seem to have issues with my internet. Any time I start downloading or streaming anything, whether it be music on my phone, movie on my computer, or netflix on my TV, the internet disconnects. This happens over wifi, connected directly via ethernet to the router, and even directly via ethernet to the modem itself. I've called Brighthouse and they said everything looks fine on their end. I've also tried flushing/resetting my IP.

I guess my question is if anyone has any ideas on what might be wrong? Is my modem bad (it's about 5 years old), is it actually Brighthouse and they don't seem to have a clue? I just find it weird it really only seems to happen when downloading/streaming and then it will disconnect and come back in a minute or two. Occasionally, I will have to unplug the router and/or modem, but rarely. I just find it odd that this happened suddenly, and never had many problems before this.

Is there something I have to do on ALL my devices, not just my main computer?

Sorry for all the questions, but any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Chris

Answer
router?

did you do a power cycle, unplug both your modem and router for a long 10 count. plug in the modem, wait until it resets and all the lights is on then plug in the router.

In the past, the only time I have seen downloads crashing is when the router is going bad. since everything you do online is downloaded, it is the larger downloads files that will overheat the router and crash. what is the full model number of the router?

Tried this

I've definitely tried power cycling everything, many times. Even tried resetting router to factory settings. The only reason I don't think this is the router is because all this still happened even when I unplugged the router and plugged just my one computer into the modem directly.

do you have any splitters in the line between outside and your modem? could be they are going bad.
