Internet connection speeds upload and ping problems

Jul 13, 2017 5:10AM PDT

I have been having problems with our internet for over a year now and had BT out at least 4 times. We are on fibre and getting around 16mbs download and 0.3 -0.5 upload, the ping jumps from 10 to 160 randomly. BT claim it's because we are near the end of the exchange and the lines are still copper in the area. I don't believe them and think it's a problem their end. I have a home hub 5 and was tempted to try a new home hub 6 router to see if it's that.

Any help appreciated as it's driving me nuts, online gaming is hardly playable. Also the wifi range is terrible.

Thanks in advance.

I Think they are telling the truth

I was so glad when all copper was gone in my neihgborhood and replaced by optic cable all the way to the house. Never had better speed and VOIP beats copper phone service completely. Copper wire can get water in the cracked insulation, many places it can ground out against other items, etc.

I agree but the connections get better for a while when I ring them and complain. Also gaming seems fine then all of a sudden goes to crap. You don't think it could be caused by a faulty router ? Cheers

I agree with the above so far.

DSL tends to do exactly what you wrote.

But about WiFi, either the owner is expecting better or pushing the limits of range, coverage or didn't do a survey of competing WiFi hotspots.

If there is WiFi issues you address those but to eek out the last drop of performance, stay wired.

DSL can be like that.

It's usually better than old dial up. Today it's going to be one of the last choices as folk want to use Netflix, etc.
