Internet Connection Sharing Using USB DSL Modem

Feb 9, 2004 9:47PM PST

I have a simple home network with two pc's running W98se. They see each other, and the gateway pc accesses the internet via a D-Link 200 ADSL Modem, USB connected. When installing ICS on the host pc, the Wizard does not list the modem as an option to connect to the internet, only the NIC card, as it expects there to be two such cards on the host. I have tried every whichway to access the internet from the client machine, slavishly following MS instructions, but no joy. I had the setup working some time ago, but have forgotten the method I used. Does anyone have a clue on this, please? It is driving me balmy!!

First question: Is it a static or dynamic network? If static, check your TCP/IP settings to link your systems. Second question: How are your systems networked? NIC (ethernet is usually the best way to network share), unless you are hubbing your resources and routing them. ALso check the control panel and Device manager to see what acutally appears in the hardware configuration, and hopefully all anti virus software was disabled prior to it's installation. Also another method to see if both systems are interconnected is to ping them (ping 127.10.10.10)for network integrity. This checks the integrity of the internal working of the NIC card, and then you can ping the remaining system to see if the other system receives it.

The two pc's are connected using a Cat5 crossover cable, and both have 10/100 Ethernet NIC's. File sharing is fine, and the "gateway " machine performs well on the net via the USB connected DSL modem. I now think that the problem may be that my ISP uses Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE), because these virtual adaptors may not be recognised by ICS. However, I once had it working, but I think that I entered all the IP's and Subnet Masks manually? Where would I find these listed? Perhaps I should give up, and install Windows XP on the host pc!
