- dial up, or router with adsl/cable?
- how do you measure the connection speed?
- NIC or USB; wireless or wired?
- what is the speed on the other computers and on this one?
- same hardware?

It is dial-up. The connection speed pops up when connected. I think it is USB and it is wired into my existing phone line. My Gateway laptop speed is usually 48 kbps and the speed on the HP pavilion A-305 W is 19.2 kpbs. Both computers have Windows XP and the HP computer is the newest. I have had a much better dial up speed on the HP but something has happened to slow it down. I appreciate any help you can offer. The HP is so slow now that it takes forever to show each page. Again thanks

Possibly a degradation of the line condition, either outside your house or in your house. Are these computers plugged in in the same connection point? Some modems are more tolerant to bad lines than others are. But 19.2 kbps is very slow indeed.

A new modem, preferably a 'hard' modem not a 'win' modem would probably help. An external modem has the advantage that you can try it with different computers without opening the case.

Hope this helps,

Kees
