Internet Connection Problem

by jeffrey_broadbent / January 12, 2007 8:24 PM PST

Hi everyone. Everytime I turn on my computer and modem I cannot connect to the internet until I pick up the phone and dial a number. I doesn't matter what number I dial, I just have to dial a number for the modem to work. Its only been happening since I uninstaled Zone Alarm. I've gone back to system restore, before I installed Zone Alarm, and I've resest the modem to factory default but still no go. I use Windows XP Home and I have an ADSL Broadband connection. The modem lights indicate the power is on and the ethernet light is on but the DSL and activity lights don't come on until I dial a number. I've tried to just wait, but after 15 minutes, still no connection until I dial a number. The service provider does not have a clue. I hope someone can help, thanks.

Since It Started After Installing ZoneAlarm...
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / January 13, 2007 3:03 AM PST

...try uninstalling ZoneAlarm and use the Windows XP firewall.. If it works correctly after uninstalling ZA and IF you're using the newest ZoneAlarm 6.5 version (firewall only), then try installing a slightly older free version of ZoneAlarm 6.1.744.001 from the link below. I've had a number of computers which would work well with the newest ZA 6.5 versions. Reverting back to the 6.1 version above fixed the issue.

Hope this helps.

ZoneAlarm may not be the culprit
by Battle Axe / January 13, 2007 11:23 PM PST

Even I use an ADSL Router for my Broadband Connection. I am not sure, if my advice may help. Anyways, open Ur ADSL Router installation book. It must have some sections on Connnection Settings/Automatic Dial/Auto Connect or something similar. Try and enable that in Ur router settings.
Thanks,
Abhishek,India.

I found the culprit.
by jeffrey_broadbent / January 14, 2007 5:02 AM PST

Thanks to both of you for your suggestions, but I think I found the culprit. My phone plug wall socket was very loose. Since I've had that fixed I haven't had a problem. Sorry if I wasted your time but I guess we have all learned something. I will now re-install Zone Alarm and see what happens.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
