Resolved Question

Internet Connection Not Possible?

Aug 6, 2011 5:02PM PDT

The saga with my new Nokia 7020 phone continues Confused . I have been to my local telcom provider twice without luck to get this Nokia connected to the internet and email.

Today I went to a Nokia Service Center and seemingly found out why the phone won't connect. Although I bought this phone in Singapore, and am using it in another, nearby Asian country, the phone was made for sale and use in the Middle Eastern market. I was told that because the phone systems in the Middle East and Asia are different, the phone's software can't connect here.

The technician said that if I tried to change or upgrade the software, all other functions of the phone might stop working (i.e., telephone, SMS and others). The data inside the phone after typing in *#0000# (briefly) says this:
Nokia 7020
V 08.10
15-04-10
RM-497
Varient 255.02

Question: Does all that sound correct to you? Further, does anyone have an idea of a possible workaround that might enable me to connect this phone to the internet? Thanks again, for any help.

The Nokia experts there will slice and dice the situation for you. There may be another workaround short of flashing the firmware.

I think the news is grim or bad.

Since you didn't get the phone from your cellular provider you are up the creek with no paddle (no support?)

Since it does not work now, what risk is there to try new firmware?

Bob, Everything works except . . .

. . . anything to do with the internet Sad . So, in changing the firmware, I'd be worried about losing those functions, too. Using your prognosis, I guess for now I'll just use the phone for SMSes, to awake each day, and for calendar events until I collect enough $$$ to buy a new, fully-functional one. Then I'll turn this one into a house planter [grin].

Try using the data settings used by other Nokia handsets supported by your cellular carrier. No guarantee, but might solve the problem. Changing the data settings won't have any effect on the other settings of the phone. Hope this helps.

Tried a Similar Phone's setting . . .
Aug 8, 2011 10:36AM PDT

. . . with my cellular carrier. The technician wasn't exactly an engineer, but she did give it a good try. Because my phone isn't sold in this country, the carrier didn't have the model in its online database. So the tech picked another phone with a vaguely similar model number. However, the settings I saw on the carrier's computer screen didn't match that well with what is on my phone's menus.

But maybe I will try your suggestion again at a different carrier support center. What it will most likely entail is a trip to the main headquarters of the (national) carrier's offices. That's okay but it's a pretty bureaucratic organization [grin]. Thanks for the help.

Don't bother

Just wait for a reply to your post @ howardforums. There are enough international users of Nokia phones there to assist. You should be able to grab the basic entries for MMS/APN/etc. from another phone using your current carrier and apply those (generically) to the 7020.

Howard Forums is an excellent source for this type of information. Make sure you post your question in either the Nokia forum or the appropriate carrier forum (if it is listed). Good luck and let us know if you get a solution.
