Internet connection goes astray?

I've had my computer over 3 months now and have had an annoying problem the whole time.(Dell dimension 3000 w/Windows XP)
I connect to the internet and all is fine for a while, then at some point, pages stop loading and I get "page cannot be displayed" and everything just stops like I've lost the internet connection. Same thing if I'm loading files using an FTP program or even on a Newsgroup, they just stop.

It still shows as connected on my task bar. The only way to get it working again is to disconnect and reconnect, then all is good again. This can happen 5 times a day or some days none. There doesn't seem to be any special time or website I'm on when it happens.

Also, when this does happen and I have to disconnect, it takes about 20 seconds to do so where normally, it would disconnect almost instantly.

I sure hope someone can help, it's driving me crazy and I've put off asking long enough.

Dial-up, DSL, Cable, something else?

Either way, I would first download and install the most recent drivers for your modem or ethernet card..Next, if you're using a broadband connection, I would turn off the modem, turn off the computer, then wait five minutes. After five minutes or longer, restart the modem and let it reinitialize, then restart the computer.

I have dial up. I'll have to check on the driver idea and try that.
