Internet Connection Failure with XP SP2

Nov 17, 2004 2:02AM PST

Each time I download and install Microsoft Windows XP Serivce Pack 2 and reboot, my computer can no longer connect to the internet via any browser or email program. I get this bizarre little popup window that says I need to connect via my dialup connection. I've been on broadband with Road Runner for the past four years! I've never used a dialup connection with this computer. The only way I can get my connection back is by using System Restore to the point prior to XP SP2.

I'd like to have the supposed security benefits of SP2. Any good suggestions to fix this will be greatly appreciated.

Not uncommon if there is spyware in the machine.

Tell how you test for and remove spyware.

I use McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004 (version 6) regularly and ran a virus scan just prior to installing SP2. I also use Adaware 6 SE Professional and Spybot Search and Destroy religiously and scanned with them also just prior to installation of SP2. I've tried this numerous times now starting from scratch with a clean reinstallation of my OS including reformatting my HD and then installing the basics (Office 2000 with all updates, McAfee Suite, Adaware, Spybot S&D, and SP2) in differing order. I always get the same result. This time it made my computer clock go off time two hours forward, and it's still set to the same setting it had been on before SP2 installation (Central)!!!!

Here's some more information that may or may not be helpful about my rig:

-Hewlett Packard Pavilion a530n Desktop
-AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Processor @ 2GHz
-400Mhz FSB
-NVIDIA nForce3 150 SPP

AUTOSTREAMER to create a XP SP2 CD so you can skip some steps.

Also, hijackthis log may reveal something.

I have an SP2 installation CD from Microsoft.

And I have a fine pair of chopsticks, but still use a XP SP2 CD to save myself a lot of trouble.

PS. In your case, a hijackthis log may be fun to look at. It can be amazing that I still find pests or items install that may trip up SP2. Hint: Install the OS, the patch and then your addons.

Your last message completely threw me. The reference to chopsticks lost me. I assume it was some form of humor that escaped me. Maybe you could explain it to me and the rest of the slow set.

I guess I'll take another shot at using hijackthis. The log it provides confuses me. I guess I just don't know enough about computers to read it properly. It has the same effect on me that Regedit does. It churns out a massive list of computer strings from which I'm supposed to be able to discern which are good and which are bad.

I guess what it all boils down to is I just don't know enough about computers, period.

You noted you had the XP SP2 CD (just the patch one). I have things around the house as well, but such may not be usefull to tackle the issue. Such as chopsticks...

With the XP OS CD with the SP2 slipstreamed in (Hint: I used AUTOSTREAMER) I can sidestep many issues which is why I noted it.

As to Hijackthis, the log could be shared here so others might comment. As it stands now, it's you versus the machine. Not a fun position.

Thank you. It was silly of me not to get what you meant about chopsticks. There's almost nothing more frustrating to me than computer problems beyond my limited ability, and I guess I wasn't in the right frame of mind when I was reading your last posting.

I'll check out Autostreamer as you suggested. And I'll pull up hijackthis and save the report so I can put it on here. I'd appreciate it if you'd take a look at it for me. It just confuses the you-know-what out of me.

I went to AutoStreamer and put AutoPatcherXP on my system. I have not activated it yet, but only extracted the zip files and have it ready to activate on my desktop. It was a HUGE file to download! What should I do with it? Should I activate it now? What exactly does it do?

I see many program in the list above that would trip up SP2 updates and more. Microsoft does not test under these conditions. Besides the notes above, ALL the other items block, trap and mangle other programs that want to alter the system. That's their purpose.

I think I see why your system won't do SP2. And I stopped at that point, but see TWO "BHO'S" that look suspicious.

Your situation is quite typical. And I see no reason SP2 will ever install.

Great. You've given me numerous reasons why SP2 will not install. Can you help out by giving me some advice on how I could go about getting it to install? That would probably help me more.

I would appreciate your help with any suggestions you have for getting SP2 to install on my computer and run properly with the other programs I use. If I have to start all over from scratch, so be it. I've done that numerous times already on my own without success.

As to helping to get SP2 installed, I already noted that I would use the integrated XP SP2 CD that you would create with AUTOSTREAMER. Hint: google.com items in capital letters.

As to cleaning up your machine to get SP2 on, I have to ask you find a HIJACKTHIS support site since this is beyond what level of support I can offer here. I can spot what can interfere, but you have to talk to the people that installed all that software to see why such was installed.

You say this is beyond the level of support you can offer "here". Where could we get together so you could help out?

I DID talk to the people who put the bundled software on my computer. They advised me to install certain updates they provided, and I did so. In their opinion that fixed that.

I looked at the AUTOSTREAMER site, and downloaded the AutoPatcherXP program. I asked once before: Is that what you were referring to, and should I install that program on my computer and run it? Do you think that will fix my problem?

Nov 19, 2004 11:29PM PST

I supplied a link to a Hijackthis forum. If you won't take advantage of such, then what will we do?

My point of asking for the log file was simple. To find out if your machine had an issue and to help you sort it out.

I do not hold hands, I help with fishing lessons and sometimes a fish or two. Some don't understand that this is not "tech support" but where we exchange dialougue about problems and how to either just cure it (fish) or how to learn how to cure it (fishing).

If you want full support, you may have to pay someone... or in the case of this Hijackthis issues, use the proper forums.

Re: My bet is this machine will not install SP2. Here's why
Nov 20, 2004 3:58AM PST

If SP2 won't work on computers that have Messenger or Outlook Express running on them(in the background mind you, I certainly DIDN'T have them up and running while I was trying to install SP2), then SP2 must not be installing on most PC's in the United States.

The two Browser Helper Objects you mention aren't being picked up by Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware 6 SE Professional, or a host of antivirus/malware programs I've run which makes me assume they must not be widely recognized as harmful. Does anyone else know in what way BHO's can block installation of SP2, and what I can do to fix this problem so I can get on with installing a functioning SP2 on my computer?

If my "situation is quite typical", and you "see no reason SP2 will ever install", logic applied to your statements leads to a conclusion that SP2 will not work for the vast majority. That doesn't sound good for Microsoft, or the millions of PC owners out there who also have "typical situations" that prevent them from installing SP2.

Re: Internet Connection Failure with XP SP2
Nov 17, 2004 3:54AM PST

What happens when you close the DUN (Dial-up Networking) window? Can you then surf the internet in IE?

I'm sure you know that broadband is "always on", and so if your broadband connection is still functioning after installing SP2, you should still be able to surf.

What appears in IE > Tools > Internet Options > Connections?

Does your Broadband connection appear in the list of "Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings"? If so, highlight it, and click the "Always dial my default connection" button to set it, then click "Set default".

For what ISP does the DUN window refer? Who is the computer attempting to dial-up? Is the displayed number a local number, or is it a Premium Rate number? (You should know how to identify Premium Rate for the country where you are, although very often they are international numbers).

If it is a Premium Rate number then you have had a dialer installed by a virus/trojan and you need to run your anti-virus and anti-spyware programs to get rid of it.

What connections show up in Network Places? If your broadband connection does not show up, then perhaps you should re-install your broadband connection software.

Re: Internet Connection Failure with XP SP2

I can't surf the net after closing the DUN popup window or use my email after installing SP2. That's the whole problem.

I checked the first thing you suggested while I was trying to troubleshoot this myself, and here's what appeared in IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connections:

"Dial-up and Virtual Privacy Network settings:
My ISP(Default)"

and

"Always dial my default connection" was selected below. I tried switching the selection to "Never dial a connection" because I don't use dial-up but that didn't help.

As far as my Road Runner software goes, I can't load it at all on this computer now for some reason. It loaded fine before I started all of this clean reinstallations of my OS and other crap trying to get SP2 to work. Now it tells me "You do not have a Network Interface Card (NIC) but you **do** have a free IRQ. Please click "Details" to address the issues with your system." When I click "Details", it tells me my operating system is "Windows 2000 build 2600"!!! I have no idea where it came up with that. My computer came with XP Home on it, and that's the only OS it has ever had. As far as IRQ info, it says "IRQ's 0,1,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,12,14 taken, IRQ's 2,3,11,13 free." What the heck is an IRQ, and what has that got to do with my problem? I DO have a Network Interface Card in my system, it's a Realtek 8201BL PHY Ethernet 10/100 card, and it worked fine before!

Here's something else puzzling about this whole situation: when I restore my system to before I installed SP2, I have Internet access (I'm using it right now to communicate with you!) and I can once again use my email. That leads me to think my problem has to be associated directly with SP2. I only lose access after SP2 is installed.

Any further suggestions?

Hi medicman

It looks like you have narrowed your problem down to the NIC, but my knowledge doesn't run that far I'm afraid.

I hope some of the experts here can tell you why SP2 cannot see your NIC.

Also, why does SP1 think you have W2000 and not WinXP? Perhaps they can answer that as well.

Sorry. I hope you get help soon.

something definately sounds amiss there cause i have been a roadrunner customer for 5 years and i have no problem connecting to internet or email or anything. only differnet here is i am running thru a router. you mentioned installing their software. you shouldnt have to install any software. ican reformat install SP2 and all my apps and connect to internet just fine.if you use roadrunner for your home page just type www.rr.com into address bar. the next page will give the option for the state and cable company. check those that apply. once on homepage go to internet options and choose current page as your home page and it will open to that everytime. sounds as though you have some spyware issues. SP2 glided right on my pc. also my stepson has an hp 510n and i put SP2 on it for him with no issues. i have seen so many people complain that sp2 broke their pc when it wasnt sp2 its other things going on such as spyware and viruses and such. these things need to be addressed before attempting to install SP2.

It sounds as if you have a vast knowledge of computers, broadband connections, spyware, viruses, and software updating procedures. You stated viruses and spyware are the issues that must be addressed prior to installation of SP2. Perhaps you could share what measures you used to ensure your system (and that of your step-son) were free of maliscious code before you updated your operating system.

Re: Internet Connection Failure with XP SP2
Nov 18, 2004 4:10AM PST

After my experience last night I think Microsoft is totally correct in saying that you have to have a 100% kosher system before installing XP2.

About 2 weeks ago I started having a major spyware/virus infection on my home PC. Basically, lots of popup windows for porn and casinos would come up and I would get lots of random periods where the activity light on my DSL modem would shut off and I couldn't surf the Web at all (my fault, I didn't have my AV software running in the background and didn't do auto updates of anything...lesson learned).

It appears Trojans overtook IRC and hacked my system.

I put in Norton Anti-Virus, Spyware Blaster, and played around with the security settings on my Internet Explorer (I had already been using AdAware, CWShredder, Hijack this, Pest Patrol and Spybot S*D regularly, though I didn't have the Spybot Tea Timer IE Resident sitting in the background to flag registry changes until now).

It cleaned up most of it, but I still had one thing left that none of them seem to solve or find. When I boot up, the casinojems.com website comes up (but using "restricted sites" settings in IE I have it come up as a blank screen with no ActiveX controls running), until then I can't surf the web, but after that I can surf fine without any problems.

HiJack This did clue me in, it showed entries to CTFMON.DLL, the infamous "My Doom" file (ironically, none of my softwares found My Doom in the search), so when I cleaned this out it worked fine again, no more "disconnections" at all, and no initial casinojems.com web screen.

The reason I'm pointing this out is that I tried to install SP2 upgrade with just that one problem left and what happened is my Internet would not work 90+% of the time after the install (the casinojems garbage was still coming up, but now I couldn't surf the web afterwards). When it did work, I was getting about 1/3 of my normal connection speed.

I will try again this weekend, see if having a clean system makes a difference.

So good luck to you.....I know how hard "cleanup" can be.

Hi again medicman. Good words from hairymon above

I know your post above was in reply to DRcrewchief, so I hope you don't mind me replying again. I'm sure DRcrew will come back to you as well.

The consensus seems to be that you must be fully prepared before you install SP2 and there have been a number of threads on this issue before.

Roddy, another poster in these forums and like me self taught said the following in one such thread;

[Quote]: You have to be completely prepared for SP2 which means. Spyware free, Adware free, virus free BEFORE you install SP2, Also go to this link from Microsoft which also has links inside of it that will tell you what to do to prepare, including programs that are known to have problems which you may have to patch BEFORE you install SP2. Also go to your computer manufacturer's web site to see if any programs that came with your computer (non Microsoft programs) that need some sort of a patch BEFORE you install SP2. After all of the above, you should have no problems. Here is the Microsoft link. Hope this helps.

His post, (and the link he mentioned), is here;

There's a lot of work to do, unless you are one of those fortunate people who "do things" and they work out right every time. Essentially they are;

1] Update all of your Anti-Spyware,Anti- Adware, Anti-Trojan, and Anti-Virus software, and do complete computer scans to ensure you are completely free of infection. For good measure you could also do a free online scan at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

2] Make sure you have all of the Windows critical and other windows updates installed, other than the SP2 update.

3] Clear out all your rubbish files, like temporary folder files, temporary internet files, history files, Recycle Bin. You can use the Windows utility "Disk Cleanup" for this, found in Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools.

4] Back-up all your important files. Difficult this if you do not have anywhere to back them up to, like a 2nd hard drive, or 2nd computer, or recordable CD's, but better for safety reasons if you do. Back-up, (make a copy), of any documents you want to save, email address book, favorites folder from Internet Explorer, (or bookmark folder in Firefox), email settings, internet connection settings, (for people on dial-up).

5] Check Microsoft's web page, (given in roddy's post), for any incompatible programs, and also check your PC manufacturer's web page for any advice they have about upgrading to SP2.

5] Run Scan disk, (or now known as Check Disk, or Error Checking), reboot the computer on completion then run Disk Defragmenter, reboot again.

6] Set a Restore Point. The SP2 installation does anyway, but it is good to be safe.

7] Re-visit Windows Update, and download and install the SP2 update. Or if you have the CD, follow the instructions and install it from there.

I cannot guarantee that this will solve your NIC and internet connection problem. Hopefully other people will have more advice for you. But this is the advice I took and used for myself last weekend when I installed SP2 and I am sure it helped me with a relatively trouble free install.

Good luck, and I hope you can soon get this sorted out. I will be checking back often to see what progress you have made.

Mark

This is VERY GOOD INFORMATION. This is the kind of step-by-step help I needed. Thank you very much. I'll follow your instructions and give it another try.

I may need to get some more security software. I have McAfee Internet Security Suite 2004, Adaware SE Professional, and Spybot Search and Destroy, all of which are completely up to date and I ran them all prior to my last botched SP2 install. I DIDN'T remember to do the Disk Cleanup and Defrag. I'll look for Scan Disk. Maybe I need something else for Trojans and other malicious crap, there's SO MUCH of it nowdays!!!!

As far as backing up my stuff I have it easy. I have a DVD+RW/CD-RW combination drive and make backups regularly.

Thank you again. I'll let you know what happens.

Trying to up-date with the SP2 was a mess! I did a system restore after I received alot of popups that I was unable to deal with. I don't like something controling my system while I'm working and dumping alot of junk in my system. Telling me I didn't have an antivirus running and I know I did. I'm too old to deal with alot of stuff I can't understand. I'm not going to attempt to re-install SP2 in my system. I can go on to SP3 and do it without SP2 being installed. All this is confusing. You know if it works, Why fix it?? I have a firewall and an antivirus, so I'm not going to do something I can't understand and ruin things!! Am I wrong in thinking this?? Will I know of a reply to my questions??

By the way, not to make this forum's thread any larger, but I was right, it was the spyware/virus issue that prevented me from succeeding with SP2. I have since reinstalled on my virus/spyware free machine and the Net runs fine. I'm so excited....

Glad to hear you found your problem and fixed it. I was able to cure my ills, too, and now am running full speed ahead with SP2 installed and running fine! My computer's performance actually increased with a good SP2 install over the way it ran with only SP1a. Thank you for your time and concern.

Is the failure due to SP2 or to infection? Why blame SP2 if your system was infected? Don't understand.

Jamata,

I DON'T know that my system is infected. That is the suggestion made by others on this stream as the most probable reason my update didn't take.

If you'd been reading my posts you'd know that I have McAfee Security Suite 2004, Adaware SE Professional and Spybot Search and Destroy ALL completely up to date and I ran checks with them immediately prior to trying to install SP2.

The others have SUGGESTED my system MAY be infected. I ran checks with three programs highly rated by many computer guru sources and took care of the few activity trackers that Spybot S&D found, which was the ONLY thing found on my system so far.
