Internet connection

When I set my internet connection on the LAN settings to
automatically detect settings, it works fine. BUT, when I restart my computer for any reason it changes it back to use a proxy server (which I don't use) and I have to go back and set it all over again. How do I make the change permenant. I am using XP with a cable connection.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank You
Watson

It may sound like a silly question but, some people don't and the change doesn't take effect.
