internet chat

Sep 25, 2004 2:54AM PDT

I'm running Windows 98, and recently downloaded the Skype IM program. It's great - simple and encrypted. The program also has a telephony setup, for chatting 'verbally' through a headset. The problem seems to be that my old Win98 box doesn't support this feature; after plugging in the headset, I can hear my brother speaking through them from his computer, but I'm unable to speak to him. Is there some driver or cd download I can get to be able to use this verbal chat program? Thanks, Eric

Since I not had any replies posted to my original message of 9/25, I'm wondering if perhaps i should have posted into another category. Thanks, Eric

In short, you neglected the forum tip. Your post is far too light on details.

Let me try for some more detail on this question. I'm running Windows 98, from a Compaq model 5050 cpu, with Netscape 7.1 as the browser. I recently downloaded Skype to use as my IM choice. The iM works well from my keyboard, but I would like also to use the audio chat function offered in the Skype program. I'm using a set of Logitech headphones with attached microphone, plugged into the cpu in the speaker and microphone jacks available in the rear of the cpu. [they're plugged in correctly]. When trying the audio IM function, I can hear the other person speaking through my earphones, but they are not able to hear me speaking. I have a sound card apparently in my computer; I can play cd's etc., but I'm wondering why this audio function won't work. Is there a download, or other correction I could make to solve this issue? Thanks, Eric

Run recorder...

And try to record your voice. It will likely fail. But it gives you a clue where the issue is. Many can't master the volume controls and don't know to look at the record settings.

I opened the recorder, clicked on 'new', spoke into the mic to tried make a recording, but the 'wave line' never moved, and nothing was played back after saving the recording to 'documents' and replaying the file through Winamp. I have 'volume control' in accessories/entertainment, but it will not open...I tried opening it through 'run' by entering: sndvol32.exe, but nothing would happen there either. Looks now like the recorder is not working; If I can hear a person on IM speaking to me through the earphones; might that mean that the volume control would not be an issue? Thanks again, Eric

You've found "it"

But I see you haven't opened the volume controls yet. It's for most a double click on the speaker on the taskbar, but you have to look under options to see the record settings.
