How do I go about being able to connect to the internet on my laptop in most countries of the world?

The method I use is simple. Find wifi hotspots.

Only been to Asia, Canada, US, but seems to be a lot of places to connect.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough. To be specific, I was on a cruise recently and some of the crew had dongles that gave them access and I gained the impression that there are services which allow subscribers wi-fi access in most countries. I recall that Sea Roam was one of them but I found the detail confusing and was hoping for some clarification.
