Question

Internal speakers not working, only left headphone works

Apr 3, 2015 6:12AM PDT

Hi All,

I've only had this laptop (Lenovo Z50-70, Windows 8.1) since December and now the internal speakers don't work at all. The sound only works through left headphone.

I've tested the sound with multiple head/earphones but sound only comes out from the left ear.

The volume control reads "speakers" regardless of whether my headphones are plugged in or not.

The problem occurs regardless of program/browser used.

I have uninstalled the driver (Conexant Smart Audio HD) through device manager, through programs and features and reinstalled from Lenovo's website.

I have searched for updates through the device manager.

Rolled back and updated through the drivers properties. I've refreshed my Laptop and tried it all again and updated my laptop through Windows Update but nothings changed.

Since you have (at least) a one year warranty, the solution seems simple: get a fixed for free. What more would you want?

Well, maybe you don't want to miss the laptop for three or four weeks (be sure to get an idea of the repair time before you send it in). Then buy a USB sound card for less than 10 USD and use that in stead of the internal sound.

Edit: I played around with the audio director but...

Classic:

I can only see the "speakers" option in the playback tab (after right clicking on the "speakers" icon)
Headphones plugged in - sound only from the left headphone.
Headphones out - no sound from internal speakers

Multi-Stream:

I can now see a speakers and headphones option in the playback tab. The speakers read "default device", the headphones read "default communications device" and remains that way regardless of whether I put in or take out my headphones.

Using the smart audio test, the left and right internal speakers work. But during the headphones test, I can still only hear the left headphone. I tested the sound with a music player and a browser but the sound only came out of the laptop speakers even when my headphones where plugged in.
