It's a shame there is no primer on why this happens but it's normal as such places have one internet connection that is shared with how many folk?

When I'm at home on my Apple wireless modem, surfing the internet goes with blazing speed. However, on the road--in motels, dorms, etc.--it's often intermittent...fast, slow and can't connect. What's the deal? Why does that happen? I can get a strong signal, but still intermittent service.
