Question

Intermittent Picture on TV with clicking and snow

Jul 9, 2018 8:26AM PDT

Hi, I have a 10 year old Pioneer Kuro Plasma TV hooked up to a 2 month old Yamaha surround stereo receiver. I also have Verizon Fios cable and a blu-ray player hooked in through the receiver, along with 5 Paradigm speakers and a subwoofer. While watching cable the TV at times will intermittently flash the picture on an off for a period of minutes, while keeping sound the entire time. It also will click loudly and sometimes show a snowy screen with no sound. It doesn't happen all of the time but it happens enough to annoy me and even unplugging everything doesn't always fix it. We've called Verizon and they told us to replace the HDMI cable from the cable box to the receiver and we did that. That did not solve the problem. It doesn't happen when we watch the blu-ray though (although we sometimes still hear that click). I really think it's the cable box, but should I replace more HDMI cables?

Answer
Does not sound like a HDMI or cable issue.

This sounds more like a power supply or other board in the TV. Dangerous and lethal voltages are inside so get repair estimates. At 10 years, folk may replace such a set.

Answer
Remove all cable/fios from HDTV

Try another power outlet to use for the HDTV, ideally on a separate circuit.

Next, eliminate AV receiver, speakers and sub.

Now, connect only blu ray player to your Kuro. See if there is still a ‘pop’ via built in speakers.

Ditto for fios; eliminate receiver/speakers/sub/blu ray when testing fios with HDTV speakers only.

Hopefully it’s not the Kuro(!)

Thanks guys, the TV is already on it's own power. I had a professionally installed in-wall surge protected outlet put in behind the TV when the TV was mounted. I guess it could be that but I would be surprised. Would it benefit me to have an electrician look at everything? I'd hate to lose the Kuro, it still has one of the best pictures you can buy in my opinion 10 years later. Just stunning blacks and handles motion beautifully.

If it worked for 10 years

And you did as asked then having an electrician look at the house wiring would be a waste in my opinion. If you want to keep the set, get repair estimates for the set.

FIXED!

It was the cable box and the receiver, they were not handing off correctly to each other. When I connected the cable box directly to the TV everything was fine. We were looking to upgrade our cable anyway so I did that and now everything works well and is routing through the receiver. So thankfully it had nothing to do with the Kuro.
