Intermittent connectivity to my home network

Oct 7, 2004 6:24AM PDT

I have a question regarding poor connectivity to my house?s wireless network. Our WAP is a Linksys 802.11G router, and is located about 25 feet from my computer and has to travel through one wall to get to my computer. This doesn?t seem like a very far distance, but my signal strength is almost always ?Low? or ?Very low?. My roommate?s computer is about 5 feet closer to the WAP than mine just on the other side of the wall and he is almost always at ?Very good?. When we first set up the network, I was usually at either a ?good? or ?low? signal strength but now I?m almost always at ?low? and have intermittent connectivity so it seems like the problem is getting worse.

Recently, I?ve often been unable to even detect our wireless network, yet I am still able to detect our neighbor?s wireless network 2 houses away. I find it strange that my computer can detect and CONNECT to a network so far away (albeit at a ?very low? signal strength) yet not even be able to DETECT our home network. When I see that I can?t even detect our network, I?ll right click on the icon in the task manager and select ?repair?. After I do this, it is usually able to detect our network and connect at a ?low? signal strength. This is a very temporary solution, though because I get disconnected from the network soon after.

We have tried changing the router?s frequency incase neighboring networks or cordless phones were interfering with our signal, with no effect.

Is there a setting that I may have wrong? Do I have a faulty wireless card? Or should we just buy some longer cables and try moving the WAP a few feet closer? Any help would be appreciated.

Note: As I was typing this up, my signal strength was briefly at "very good" then when I tried to post the message, I had degraded to "low" and then was disconnected. Why do I have such a variable signal strength?

I have a 8 dollar "linkbuddy" wifi card that works far better than a namebrand wifi card. Someone gave me the namebrand, but it exhibits exactly your issue.

The issue is simple. Inside these cards are "radios". Drop then on give them a jolt and the radio can be detuned and not work as well. I don't see a warning to users about this. Many just let them tumble around a briefcase and I'd seen too many get dropped.

Bob,

Can you point me in the direction of a cheap wifi card that you were referring to? I'm going to swap cards with my roommate to see if it's the card that's giving me problems. If so, I can't justify spending $50 on another linksys that might not even work again.

http://www.compgeeks.com/details.asp?invtid=11WP-611AL I picked up 4 of them. 2 were on their sunday sizzler sale for about 8 bucks. They worked in 98 and Windows 2000 just fine so I ordered 2 more. You should be able to pick up retail cards with return policy so you can see if a new card works for you.

Best of luck,

I put my WiFi card into a different slot and in the process, reinstalled the drivers. Now my signal strength is either "very good" or "good". I have yet to see a "poor" signal strength in the 5 hours since I swapped slots.

I'm not sure why this has had any affect on my signal strength. Maybe there was something wrong with the slot, or maybe since the card's antenna is a few inches higher, it impacted the signal strength. None of these seem very likely, but I am definitely seeing positive results. No disconnections yet!
